Coolant flange gasket on drivers side of engine was leaking coolant onto the transmission. Coolant flange and gasket replaced, coolant topped off. Plastic coolant reservoir was no longer transparent so it was replaced as well

Happened for the dealer as well. Dealer contacted VW Technical department. Unclear if in USA or Germany. Told to replace coolant sensor as an odd failure mode could cause this problem and not give a distinct fault code for a defective sensor. That idea worked!
