Cracked exhaust manifold- GM has a known problem with the combo exhaust manifold/ catalytic converter on the 2008 2.4l engine. “Customer Service” told me the extended warranty does not cover the combined unit, since they consider this one part to be “2 components “ which is beyond comprehension. Dealer charged $120 to confirm what I knew - the manifold was kaput. They wanted another $1,390 (before tax) and warranty was 12 months. Monro price was $ 994 (with tax) and the unit has a 5 year warranty. A car with this low mileage should not have this kind of problem. This car is babied, not abused. The GM rep kept emphasizing the age of the vehicle and repeatedly told me because it was SO OLD they couldn’t provide any cost contribution. Car is riding quiet and clean, no thanks to GM.
82300 mi Noisy exhaust and fumes in air vents indicated the problem. A loose bolt caused the gasket between the flex pipe and exhaust to erode. Monro replaced the gasket and put Loctite on the suspect bolt - no charge. This was a follow-up to the replacement of the manifold/cat unit.
45000 mi Check engine light came on. Car taken to authorized Saturn repair facility. Dealer replaced oxygen sensor (covered by extended warranty), exhaust manifold (covered by extended warranty),  and air intake tube, $245.00. Dealer claimed extended warranty does not cover the part. I challenged this with GM/Saturn, they reimbursed me.
48000 mi Check engine light came on. Car was taken to authorized Saturn repair shop. Repair shop reprogramed engine control module. Cost zero Check engine light came on again at 47,570 miles. Dealer order and installed Camshaft Position Actuator Valves and seals both intake and exhaust.
