8000 mi Still having issues with the transmission. Cant always replicate the problem so the dealer says nothing he can do.

US $800
delay shifting
63000 mi

US $700

26000 mi Leaking fluid
19840 mi Left rear Differential Seal leaking. Repaired under TSB# 2026049/8 Vehicle still under warranty. Would have cost $2600. TSB is for S4 and S5 with quattro sports rear differential. Re-re both rear coils. Replaced both drive axels.
28520 mi Dsg issues mechatronic failure. Dealer is struggling to sort out issue DSG failure, Mechatronics needs to be replaced - car has been at the dealer for 6 days - replaced gear box
67580 mi The DSG automatic transmission failed and made the car go into limp mode, preventing the car from being driveable. The dealership diagnosed the problem to a faulty circuit board and replaced it. This is a common problem. TSB.
96000 mi

US $1500
Failure of Mechatronic Unit! Prevalent in this model and dealers are not cooperative when it comes to repairs.
120000 mi

US $1989
The car did not have reverse, 2nd, 4th or 6th gears: It could only drib=ve in 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th gears. TSB.
56000 mi

US $50
Repair cost was $50 because I purchased an additional warranty. Transmission had a hard thud and lurch forward at slow speeds when downshifting to 2nd and 1st gear.
78000 mi

US $750
Mechatronic unit failure
22000 mi On the highway, the engine revved to redline because the transmission did not engage a lower gear when pressing the gas pedal to accelerate. The car coasted in neutral instead before eventually selecting a lower gear.
25800 mi Several warning lights came on: Rear Differential Warning Light, ESP Light, Dynamic Steering Light. Dealer unable to duplicate, and reset the warning lights. Recommended further investigation if lights came back on. Rear Sport Differential light came back on. Audi U.S. service techs found 1 of 3 oil temp sensors in rear differential was faulty. No problem with sensor, oil temp, or mechanicals. Updated algorithm code. Problem solved.

3000 mi Rear differential leaking oil, replaced seal.
59000 mi

US $6000
Mechatronics unit failed due to thermostat failing in closed position, resulting in car overheating. No coolant loss was seen, this was entirely a thermostat failure. The resulting overheating caused electronics in the Mechatronics unit for the DSG to fail, putting the car into a limp mode where the transmission Reverse and Even gears were unavailable. Problem solved when mechatronics unit was replaced and the transmission reconfigured by the dealer.

C $600
Leaking transmission seal discovered during transmission oil change. 2.5 hours of labour required + parts.

Seals on transmission failed. Transmission removed, seals and pump replaced. Underlying cause is speculative, but it may be that the dealer (who replaced the transmission fluid as part of scheduled maintenance) overfilled the transmission.
3300 mi DSG transmission would shift early (at 5000 rpm) in 2nd gear, while I was in manual mode. All other gears allowed me to shift at redline (7000) rpm. Mechatronic unit was replaced, but problem remained. Update: 2012 S5 that replaced this car does the same.
