Cheap and fuel-efficient 4WD for off road and city

The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

gamarmol92

I'm looking for a 4WD car that would be fuel-efficient, since I'm gonna beusing it off-road (every week for about 2-3 days) and on the city. From what I've been researching I narrow my optionsto:

  • Nissan Xterra: my first option but keep finding a lot of ppl saying they have too many problems with them and I'm not sure if the fuel consumption it's really high.
  • Nissan X-Trail: good off-road car?
  • Suzuki Grand Vitara
  • Suzuki Jimmy: kinda small
  • Jeep Liberty
  • Honda CR-V
  • Mitsubishi Montero
  • Mitsubishi Pajero
(Not planning on buying any model above 2007, cause of the cost)

Hoping you could enlighten me on the subject. From which of these cars could I actually expect to have less trouble with? Or do you have any other car as a suggestion?

Thx

Priorities: Off-road capability / Fuel economy / Depreciation

Need minimum of 4 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 110000
Maximum age: 17 years

Maximum price: US $ 10000

I think it depends what your offroad needs are. If a CR-V gets you where you need to go, then that will be your most reliable and economical bet; or it would be in the US at least. If you need something more, you might want to look into a Subaru (Outback or Forrester probably) and see if one of them meets your needs. The other options you list don't have the best reliability. The Suzuki Jimmy (Samauri in the US?) is a legit 4wd vehicle; as opposed to the other awd vehicles you list, so it will have some off-road advantages from that. I think the Xterra is decent off road too (not really familiar with it) but it is truck-based; in the US at least they're typically found with v6 engines so they don't get very good fuel economy and won't be as cheap to maintain.

I would second mcwten on the Subaru Forester/Outback. Solid car; my friend has one and is done for life. Says he will keep buying these !
Look at the Nissan Rouge as well. My bro-in-law has had one for years and loves the low maintenance costs.

Good luck !

A Trailblazer or Tahoe would fit criteria. Not sure.if the 4.2l Trailblazer is much more efficent than the 5.3 Tahoe or not. The body on frame is perfect for off roading.
