  Outstanding value CUV

Best Reason to Buy the Ford Escape: Price or payments
Low price for features included compared to other CUVs in this segment

Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Escape: Materials & workmanship
Interior is low end "fabric" for lack of a better word. Distracting array of shades of beige on the dash, doors and seats

Other Reasons to Buy the Ford Escape: Powertrain performance, Driving position & visibility, Cargo capacity, Feature availability

Other Reasons Not to Buy the Ford Escape: Handling

  Not an SUV anymore

Best Reason to Buy the Ford Escape: Handling
Handling has been improved on the 2013 redesign. The Escape now handles like a car, which is what it has become. Steering is quicker, suspension has less body roll, but is harsher over bumps.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Escape: Driving position & visibility
The rear quarter windows are small and visibility to the right side blind spot is very poor. The outside mirror on the right side is not of much help. The stylistic design is a step backwards in visibility and safety. On the positive side, there is more headroom than in most hatchbacks.

Best Reason to Buy the Ford Escape: Reliability & durability
We purchased this car with about 100k miles already on it. The car served us well for about a year (40,000 miles). We averaged 31MPG combined w/o the AC on and about 28 with the AC on. We like the car but it had a lot of high pitched noises at all speeds. On 7/4/13 the car suddenly lost all drivetrain power. It was diagnosed with a failed hybrid water pump. A warning should have come on to pull over but did not. By the time the computer shut down the vehicle, it was too late. Ford said a new transaxle is in order at a cost of over $12,000 (includes installation). Think long and hard before you buy into the theory that a hybrid will save you money.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Escape: Powertrain performance
Catastrophic failure of the hybrid system at 141,000 miles

Best Reason to Buy the Ford Escape: Exterior styling
Styling is a matter of personal preference, of course, but even after nearly a year of seeing the 2013 Escape on the road, I still greatly prefer the look of the 2008-2012 body style. Yes it's boxy, yes it's less refined, yes it looks like it's trying to imitate an Expedition. Don't care. There's something much more honest about this design than the tortured, Euro-inspired cuteness and "modern!" appearance of the 2013 model.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Escape: Powertrain performance
The little 2.5L four-cylinder offers decent power for its size, but idles very coarsely with the A/C on and in gear. Ford has issued a service notice for this problem, but it basically comes down to, "we know there are complaints, but resolving the issue isn't a priority for us."

Best Reason to Buy the Ford Escape: Fuel economy
Looking for something with good fuel mileage and a bit of hauling ability to replace full size truck. Easily doubled fuel mileage.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Escape: Cargo capacity
It's small...no 2 ways about it, especially compared to the full size truck it replaced. Towing...no way...4 banger and FWD..

Other Reasons to Buy the Ford Escape: Warranty, maintenance cost, Discounts & incentives, Audio & nav systems, Feature availability

Best Reason to Buy the Ford Escape: Exterior styling
Familiar styling. This is one of the last two yeras for the old style, and it is much better than the current style.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Escape: Quietness
There is more road noise that the newer model

Best Reason to Buy the Ford Escape: Powertrain performance
Wife needed a car that could conquer snowy/icy roads/driveways for work. The AWD w/ 2.3L 4 cyl & 5-spd manual is rock solid, and gets great MPGs.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Ford Escape: Materials & workmanship
The seat cover materials are the worst in a car I've ever owned. Plain water stains them terribly. The dealer admitted it was a problem with the XLS model's cheap materials, but couldn't/wouldn't do anything about it.

Best Reason to Buy the Ford Escape: Fuel economy
I was looking for better mileage. I got 33+ no problem. The car taught me how to drive more efficiently. I am getting 34-35+ in the summer months now. My son has learned to drive the same way by starting with the Hybrid.
