Why the 2004 Ford Excursion?

Fuel economy

This is a 6,200 pound vehicle that I need for my work. I need to haul long items and occassionally tow heavy trailers for work. It is a diesel and for 136,000 miles I have averaged 17.8 mpg. If this were gasoline powered I would be 8-10 mpg, or less.

Driving position & visibility

I can see way ahead in traffic. I can be seen. I sit above the normal automobile crash zone.

Powertrain performance

It can pull everything I have ever wanted and it does it without straining and getting good mpg. Towing 10,000# does drop the mpg to about 10, but nothing else does better.

Safety & braking

Brakes are average, but safety is way above other small to average sized cars. I know in a roll over it might not, but I have driven about 46 years and only had one of those - maybe that was enough not to do it again.

Why Not the 2004 Ford Excursion?

Exterior styling

It is a brick. They could have done a better job making it stylish. GM has done better on the Suburban, but with an inferior powertrain.
