The Taurus completely fell apart on me, starting at a whopping 90K miles. The insides hold together well, but everything important, the powertrain, suspension, etc., failed at very ripe ages.

This review was originally a two-car comparison review. Read the other half here.
The Ford Taurus Mercury Sable 1986 - 2005 is one of the finest cars ever manufactured by Ford Motor Company. But as with all cars, the owner has to maintain the car. The owner has to read the manual and take appropriate actions for maintenance. Too many in the US of A just drive a car until it breaks. Then wonder why something has broken. Don't be one of these. Change the oil every 3,000 miles and change the automatic transmission fluid every 24 months. People don't seem to wax their cars. For some reason people think that cars with clearcoat don't need to be waxed. Yes, they do. A hand paste wax. Not the car wash spray was. I have two of these cars. a 1997 Mercury Sable wagon and a 2002 Ford Taurus wagon. Both with the 3.0 OHV (overhead valve) Vulcan engine. These engines go on forever. I have driven the 1997 Mercury Sable wagon from Cape Ann (Gloucester, MA) to San Diego, CAtwo times in the past three years with zero issues. And these cars are the most comforatble cars out there. Not like the new cars with hardsmall seats. Just a pleasure to drive.
