My 1993 4door DX was replaced this spring by a 2009 DX-VP. It had 203,000 miles. Required one non-scheduled repair. Chicago gridlock, roads, salt corrosion, potholes and the fact I got in 1995 when I was 16year old jackass took toll on it. Tough and Mean!

The Civic depreciates at a far slower rate than the competitors. So even if all things were equal between a 3, Focus, Forte and a Civic (and they are not the Civic is superior) the Civic maintains so much more of its value that the decision is easy.
Superb fuel economy. The Civic gets 1.5 liter mileage on the highway (40+ with AC in my experience) and excellent mileage in the city (30+ MPG). It does this without the anemic hybrid performance or the inconveniences of a diesel engine.
Most cars look good in the showroom. It is over time that the differences in quality are exposed nakedly and beyond dispute. Personal experience and empirical evidence demonstrate the Civic will be squeak and groan free 5 and 10 years down the line.
