Reviewed: 2003 Honda Pilot

4dr SUV 240-horsepower 3.5L V6 5-speed automatic AWD

Why the 2003 Honda Pilot?

Ride smoothness

An SUV that rides like a car but gets you up off the road. The car rides smoothly in freeway and back road situations.

Handling

The vehicle has car like characteristics with a turning radius that puts other comparable autos in the same class to shame. The transmission is responsive and "learns" your driving style. The braking is responsive and acceleration is more than adequate.

Reliability & durability

Its a Honda! Regular maintenance provides you with a vehicle that can always be counted on.

Fuel economy

Over the period of ownership the vehicle has averaged 20-21 mpg in urban environments and 23-24 on the highway. This has been very consistent regardless of the driving conditions.

Why Not the 2003 Honda Pilot?

Exterior styling

The look is an acquired taste. I would never say that the Pilot is a stylish car but it is certainly functional.

Rear seat room & comfort

Would like to see Honda improve the 2nd and 3rd row legroom. In the 2003 model the 3rd row is essentially for use by children.

Audio & nav systems

EXPENSIVE! Compared with after market GPS devices you really pay a premium for features you can purchase for a quarter the price. The audio system is functionally adequate but nothing to brag about.

Discounts & incentives

There are very rarely discounts or major incentives on this vehicle. There has been high demand in the past but it remains to be seen how higher gas prices will affect this model.
