Reviewed: 2009 Hyundai Sonata

4dr Sedan 249-horsepower 3.3L V6 5-speed shiftable automatic FWD

Why the 2009 Hyundai Sonata?

Fuel economy

Easily control economy from 20-26mpg depending on driving style, not necessarily road type.

Rear seat room & comfort

Rear room is great even if front seats all the way back. Also has wonderful cup holder and fold down arm tray.

Price or payments

Always great incenstives. 0% financing or cash back. That combined with the low price to begin with, hard to beat.

Reliability & durability

Long track record of major component reliability. The car will last without major issues for 5 years -statistically.

Why Not the 2009 Hyundai Sonata?

Ride smoothness

The car often has tire balancing issues in this model year, especially those with Kumho tires. There is also automatic transmission vibration. These issues could cause headaches for repair.

Materials & workmanship

Vents go snap/crackle/pop while flexing in temperatures. Noisy plastic bits from the dash, rumbling rear suspension.

Dealer practices

Dealership tries to promote sales by offering parts of comission if purchased by a friend/family member by referal.

Depreciation

Depreciation value is high. Likely to have to keep the car 4 years to get 20% money back. Otherwise drive it into the ground.
