Reviewed: 2005 Jeep Liberty

4dr SUV turbocharged 160hp 2.8L I4 Diesel 5-speed automatic 4WD w/low range

Why the 2005 Jeep Liberty?

Fuel economy

29.5 mpg highway average is phenomenal for a 4,300 lb vehicle that is usually loaded to 5,000 lbs providing a highway range of 600 miles.

Cargo capacity

17 to 20 mpg while towing over 5,000 lb boat and trailer. Plenty of room for cooler and baggage in a reasonably sized vehicle. 500 lb tongue weight on trailer barely affects rear suspension.

Powertrain performance

Common Rail diesel engine is very quiet on the highway pulling steep inclines at 1,900 rpm without down-shifting. Very tight turning radius.

Safety & braking

Brakes are well modulated with very good stopping and control. Vehicle is rock solid with no flexing or rattles.

Why Not the 2005 Jeep Liberty?

Quietness

Paradoxically, the diesel engine seems noisier on the inside than outside during low speed acceleration. While I like the light diesel sound some may find it annoying.
