I researched online and spoke with Optima owners. Kia has come a long way in reliability in the past few years. I was surprised by the level of owner loyalty. People who own Optimas enthusiastically recommend them.
2008 4dr Sedan 162-horsepower 2.4L I4

Good general reliability, which is backed by an excellent warranty
2007 4dr Sedan 185-horsepower 2.7L V6
5-speed shiftable automatic FWD
I have had zero problems with the car. Trim and everything is just like new.
2005 4dr Sedan 170-horsepower 2.7L V6
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Have not had to call roadside service once in three years
2004 4dr Sedan 138-horsepower 2.4L I4

Have had 0 problems until just recently the clutch pressure plate broke! $800 to fix and not under warranty! Not happy about that.

What Our Members Are Saying about the Reliability and Durability of the Kia Sportage

Kia Sportage Reliability and Durability: Pros
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2008 4dr SUV turbocharged 138hp 2.0L I4 Diesel
6-speed manual AWD
My previous Kia was totally reliable. The Sportage has the same engine & gearbox and many common fittings so I am hoping for the same (it has positive consumer reviews). The interior is designed for work with a well lined cargo area.
2006 4dr SUV 173-horsepower 2.7L V6
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
Very reliable and durabile at a very reasonable price.
Kia Sportage Reliability and Durability: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2012 4dr SUV turbocharged 260hp 2.0L I4
6-speed shiftable automatic AWD
Remains to be seen. Kia motors is on it's way up and I still think it could go either way as far as durability and reliability are concerned.
