Reviewed: 2006 Kia Sedona

4dr Minivan, ext. 244-horsepower 3.8L V6 5-speed shiftable automatic FWD

Why the 2006 Kia Sedona?

Price or payments

Signifcantly lower price for the same equipment than Sienna or Odyssey

Discounts & incentives

Relatively good rebates, especially near the end of the model year

Feature availability

Had virtually all of the features I was looking for as standard for the trim model, or where added in just two options packages

Powertrain performance

Responsive engine with option of manually shifting automatic transmission

Handling

Steering has good feedback to the driver. Brakes and suspension are good.

Why Not the 2006 Kia Sedona?

Insurance cost

Insurance premiums appear to near or maybe slightly higher than for peer minivans from Toyota or Honda. However, depreciation is much worse. You are better off to keep it for 8 or more years. Prior to that, depreciation will be too great.

Reliability & durability

Published reliability survey information shows the 2006 Sedona (first year of the re-design) already to be below average. Mine has developed a rattle and squeek at the rear seats and wall panel area. Not too bad, but notice it more than before.

Past personal experience

The previous Sedona design had below average reliability in many areas of the vehicle

Brand reputation & image

Sedona and Kia have a reputation for low cost but also low brand image for quality. I think they have made great strides on the quality side and in improving the overall designs in the latest models

Fuel economy

The 2006 Sedona gets about 1-2 MPG less in real life MPG reports, compared to its Toyota and Honda competition
