Reviewed: 2004 Land Rover Freelander

4dr SUV 174-horsepower 2.5L V6 5-speed shiftable automatic AWD

Why the 2004 Land Rover Freelander?

Exterior styling

Beautiful smooth lines. Paint finish. Perfect amount of chrome and bling. Solid panels that resists door dings, dents. Looks like a truck but drives like a sports car. Imposing on highway traffic.

Interior styling

Beatiful non-glare plastic, at the same level as any BMW or Mercedes. Easy to clean and maintain as new with only silicone spray. Easy to detail, no small nooks and crannies where dirt can get caught. High quality leather rivaling BMW, Mercedes, etc.

Safety & braking

Short braking distance. Solid locking doors, airbags adequate to size of car. Solid high quality seat belt anchoring specially for small child seats. Tall stance gives a safety margin on side crashes. Weight gives an inertia advantage on any crashes.

Why Not the 2004 Land Rover Freelander?

Cargo capacity

Small cargo trunk, not enough for a family of 4 grownups. Not comparable in volume capability to even a Hyunday Tucson, more like a Honda CRV.

Fuel economy

Fuel thirsty which is understandable given its weight, the smallish underpowered engine (for this model) and the full time 4wd.

Reliability & durability

Had the traditional types of problems ranging from faults on reaccelleration (engine cuts), water consumption (leaky cooling system) and an O2 senson cabling rupture which let it dead. It went to the dealer every 6 months the first two years. Cured now!
