Why the 2002 Lexus IS?

Handling

Direct and balanced steering feel, without feeling heavy. No on center play. Stable in corners and under hard acceleration.

Reliability & durability

Virtually no major repair issues. At 82,000+ miles, have replaced only wear items. Yet to do suspension, electrics, joints, bushings, etc.

Powertrain performance

Smooth straight 6. Ample power. Decent low end torque, with a strong pull to redline. Some coarseness in cold weather. Very crisp and smooth transmission. Decent manu-matic (for 2002) with quick shifts. Lets you rev to redline. Bad: no 1st year launch.

Driving position & visibility

Comfortable position to wheel and controls. Tight cockpit. No frills. Small A pillar for good forward visibility. Easy sight line to hood corners.

Materials & workmanship

No rattles! Doors solid and heavy. Gearshift lever has satisfying snick. Germanic feeling buttons and switches for a Japanese car. Good quality paint, wheels, etc. No steering, suspension or driveline wear is noticeable to date.
