Introduction

Bought this car fully expecting a basic econobox. I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that the car is much more. It has a quiet ride, excellent handling, very accruate steering and is a blast to drive. I am very happy with it so far and would recommend it for anyone looking for a balance between fuel economy and fun.

Why the 2011 Mazda Mazda2?

Powertrain performance

When I purchased this car I was concerned the 100hp engine would not be up to the task, especially when accelerating on the highway. My fears proved to be unfounded. That said I think my choice of manual transmission allows me to wring out the most performance. So far the car has more than met my expectations and has been able to keep up with any traffic at most highway speeds. I typically cruise at 120-130 kmph and lane changes are no problem either.

Exterior styling

Took some getting used to. The big grin grill is a bit unattractive but the rest of the car has good lines.

Interior styling

The interior is clean and uncluttered. Some would even decribe it as sparse. This works well for me as I was not looking for lots of gadgets and buttons. It has all the basic controls, plus a selection of steering wheel mounted buttons for audio and cruise control. The seats are very comfortable even for long trips; I have done 10 hour drives and got out feeling like it was an hour. The only drawback is some of the hard surfaces. I would have liked some padding on the door armrests as the current ones are not all that comfortable to rest my elbow. Overall well executed.

Quietness

I was very surprised how quiet this car is. At this price point and based on other vehicles I test drove I expected more noise and harshness. However the car is very quiet even at highway speeds and handles bumps and railway crossings very well.

Handling

I can only say "zoomzoom". This car handles like a mini BMW. The steering is quick and accurate and it takes curves like a vehicle in a more expensive class. This is probably one of the most fun cars I have ever driven. I think the fun comes from the combination of the fine suspension set up and the manual transmission. Not sure if it would be as good with an automatic transmission.

Why Not the 2011 Mazda Mazda2?

Rear seat room & comfort

The rear seats are pretty good but the headrests are poorly executed. They either poke the passenger in the back or put their head in an uncomfortable position.

Feature availability

Would have liked to have been able to purchase a Sirius radio upgrade and handsfree phone package.

Driving position & visibility

Would have liked if the steering wheel had both tilt and telescopic adjustment capability. Only comes with tilt.
