The garage I purchased the Mazda from replaced the MAF sensor and the Mazda genuine oxygen sensor to no avail and they do not seem to have an idea how to solve it.

So I am just following the troubleshooting guide from https://www.autocodes.com/p2178_mazda.html and replace/cleaning small things I can myself when I want to. Cleaned throttle body and replace spark plugs. I found the #1 plug was covered in oil so the valve gasket replacement is needed. But I won't do it before I replace the PCV valve, which is apparently not an easy job due to its location (underneath the intake manifold). Perhaps I will get to it when it's warmer outside.

A second opinion from a trusted repair shop found no functional problem with the strut/shocks, no loose parts or fasteners, but did acknowledge the noise. We believe the noises are a "feature" not a "bug" of the Mazda 5 suspension. We know this is a common problem with the Mazda 5 suspension / struts, so we had kept our ears open to it. The fact is, the struts have been more or less noisy since we got the car three years ago at around 30K miles. We believe the strut design is bad from the standpoint that the struts can get noisy. It otherwise functions the way it should, absorbing shocks fine, leaking no oil.

After 7 months and $2500, I finally got the car to run but probably needs a new body control module but don't know which one to get: the Mazda base or Mazda GT. The harness came from a base but I own a GT? After changing entire engine harness and body harness, some systems don't work properly. For example, the body control module likely needs to be replaced. The power steering, cruise control, heated seats, and sunroof don't work. No connectors for the heated seat switches, the ABS seat connector doesn't match the airbag under seat wiring.

Inquired about a whistling / wind sound from car interior driver side, turns out it was a failing brake booster. PCM flashed / updated due to brake booster replacement. Took Car in for Transmission Diagnostic due to stumble / rough shift in fourth 3rd/4th gear and sometimes in 2nd/3rd. Dealer had for 2 weeks and could not reproduce the problem. Mazda Totalcare warranty company claimed not enough evidence to even send tech out for test drive. I was faced about 4 hours of diagnostic tests at $130/hr or transmission tear down. Mazda seemed to think it was fine and believed it to be a throttle body cleaning issue so I opted to decline both of those options as it was a very expensive gamble and figured perhaps I was wrong, although my gut said that I was in fact right which was unfortunately confirmed on a recent vacation not long after these events. Engine threw code from last trip to dealer, didn't get off the lot without another code. I believe it was P2178. Indicated a bunch of fuel system stuff that was too complex for me to fix. Took a gamble that it was something serious and would be paid by Mazda Totalcare...lost that gamble as it they believed it needed and it it ended up being just an expensive throttle body cleaning. Wife reported brake system acting up...almost hit a car because couldn't stop, said brake pedal would not depress enough. I didn't think much of it and thought problem was possibly her...then when we picked up the car after the throttle body cleaning it did again and was equally dangerous / scary. I had her turn right around and take the car right back and told them that the problem had occurred again and that it had been going on intermittently since the brake booster was replaced during the last repair trip. After evaluating the brake system, dealership concluded it was some excess air in the lines from the brake booster replacement and bled them a little more which has fixed the problem.

A complaint is logged with the dealer regarding the steering wheel audio controls, which are beginning to perform incorrect functions, such as volume changing track etc. I realize that the squeal happens when the AC is on, and suggest this to the dealer. They claim to have never checked that as a possibility, and find that it is indeed the culprit. The AC tensioner and belt are replaced under warranty.
