Reviewed: 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

4dr SUV 292-horsepower 4.6L V8 6-speed automatic AWD

Why the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer?

Cargo capacity

The vehicle has plenty of room for hauling various items. The Mountaineer also has a lot of low-end tourque when trailering. I pulled my Ford Escort and did not even know it was there, likewise when pulling a camper or the snowmobiles.

Reliability & durability

This unit has been fairly reliable for me. I had a battery problem when I first purchased the SUV but it was rectified quickly.

Audio & nav systems

The sound system is excellent, very clear and not inaudible at all. The navigation system works great and virtually eliminates the need for road maps

Ride smoothness

Ford retuned the Mountaineer/Explorer frame and suspension. The result was outstanding. I drove from Chicago to Colorado Springs in one day and felt as fresh when I arrived in Colorado as I did when I left Illinois.

Quietness

The vehicle is whisper quiet thanks to new door and window seals throughtout.

Why Not the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer?

Powertrain performance

The engine is outstanding. The transmission leaves a lot to be desired. The transmission shifts harshly, but Ford is working to rectify the problem with a new program.
