Why the 2014 Nissan Altima?

Fuel economy

80 miles total commute each day, average 30mpg with a 70% highway and 30% city roads. CVT helps make that mpg count very high for a gas engine and relatively weighted sedan.

Audio & nav systems

With the SL package, you get the Bose upgraded sound sytem and 7" navigation. I am no audiophile, comparing it to my 2010 TSX TLS audio system, that beats it out in terms of bass punch, and overall clarity.

Powertrain performance

CVT is a love hate relationship for most. I grew up with 4/5 speed auto slushboxes from Acuras and Fords of the early 90's and most will say they want to feel the car shift to the next gear. Until I came to the Altima CVT. For a 2.5 cylinder engine, it provides enough oomph to get going, although I do miss the 6 cylinder engines of yesteryear. That rubberband feeling that everybody keeps talking about, don't experience it here. I enjoy the feeling of the car that keeps on accelerating smoothly without those abnoxious shifts. On steep hills the rpms stay under 2K. Torque this engine does not have, but as a commuter car with the amenities, fuel milage, good powertrain (18K mi so far) no issues and acts like new.

Reliability & durability

For 20k miles so far mailnly used as a commuter car and well, everything else too I don't see any issues other than the regular oil changes and tire rotations. Time will tell how well the CVT holds up but from Nissan's standpoint they had it for a long time and I expect it to hold up. FYI I did not do those "mandatory" maintenance checkups, mostly do it at the 30k mark.

Why Not the 2014 Nissan Altima?

Audio & nav systems

Any OEM system is not as good as the good as google maps on the smartphone. The Nav system on this unit is quick and easy to use with the touchscreen, but it does use the old touchscreen tech...capacitive screens with a thin film in front. That just makes it annoying since it requires pressure-like feel, pinching zooms even harder and easily messes up. Bose audio system is decent, the TLS system on Acura is by far superior with the deep bass and overall range clarity. Can't say much about the base model, but this being an SL, good enough. Not great, not bad, just average. Connect the phone to the audio system and do the navigation from the phone and it lowers the music while the voice commands go over the sound system.
