What Our Members Are Saying about the Reliability And Durability of the Volvo S40

Volvo S40 Reliability And Durability: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2002 4dr Sedan turbocharged 160hp 1.9L I4
5-speed automatic FWD
After 75k miles the dealer who sold it to me and where I had been servicing it told me I should get rid of it. The problem is sludge due to infrequent oil changes. The check engine light keeps coming on. This first happened before 40k miles. full 2002 Volvo S40 review
2002 4dr Wagon turbocharged 160hp 1.9L I4
5-speed automatic FWD
In general the car is well built, durable, and for the most part reliable. However, The electrical/electronic system is over-engineered, prone to failure, and expensive to repair (alternator $800!). full 2002 Volvo S40 review
