Why the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg?

Interior styling

The interior is great. Easy to maintain. Stands up to average family abuse of liquids, dirt, etc..

Fuel economy

Like any diesel, it is always above EPA rating. No complaints at all.

Towing

With a 7700lb towing capacity and combined with diesel powertrain, it can tow just about anything. Towed a trailer full of sod and never felt the weight at all. Also towed my 600lb motorcycle as well without any issues.

Reliability & durability

Had issues with the Adblue heater and replaced that. Also sometimes the Glowplug light turns on after a start in the morning, and have the odd NOX sensor check engine light come on. But in both cases after several restarts and a good heavy foot drive on the highway the issues disappears. So crossing my fingers that these do not become long term issues and requires repairs.

Powertrain performance

LOVE the diesel torque off the line. Drove a V6 Toyota 4Runner and compared to the V6 in the Diesel! What a let down on the 4Runner, you mash the gas and you wait for the engine/vehicle to pick up speed, there is no pushing back into the seat that you get from the torque of a Diesel.

Why Not the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg?

Warranty, maintenance cost

Maintenance costs are high relative to say Japanese cars. Annual maintenance is $980. If you buy this vehicle, definitely get it with some sort of extended warranty.

Dealer practices

They like to pressure you into oil changes sooner than required. Dealers in general do not provide good followup and considering this is a > $40,000 vehicle that's not good.

Brand reputation & image

Given the current Dieselgate situation and how it is being handled both by VW and CARB/EPA, not likely to buy another VW. Most likely switch to another brand as long as they sell diesel vehicles.
