Reviewed: 2004 Subaru Impreza

4dr Sedan 165-horsepower 2.5L H4 5-speed manual AWD

Why the 2004 Subaru Impreza?

Handling

Snappy, responsive, fun ride. Corners well, handles well in all weather conditions thanks to AWD.

Safety & braking

Incredible braking distances have saved me, a number of times, from disaster.

Powertrain performance

The engine has a lot of torque and delivers great power as needed, transmission problems in the MY00-04 associated with center differential (C Clip slipping off of viscious coupler resulting in toasted tranny) seem to have been addressed in later models.

Fuel economy

28+ MPG, nothing to complain about.

Price or payments

Negotiated 18K out the door, great value!

Why Not the 2004 Subaru Impreza?

Interior styling

Rustic, utilitarian

Color choices

The standard variety of colors, no "dune" or "desert" color

Ride smoothness

The rally-inspired suspension can be choppy at times.

Quietness

Engine / Transmission whine can be loud at times.

Audio & nav systems

The sound quality is OK, but for the money Subaru charges to for upgrades they should use higher quality components.
