Head gasket blew 500 miles from home. Vehicle was blowing bubbles out of the radiator with the cap off no external block leaks and no contamination of the engine oil. Put in a can of block seal and limped home stopping every 100 miles or so waiting for the engine to cool down and adding antifreeze . Dealer (North End Subaru in Lunenburg Ma) said they pulled the engine out of the car and replaced the head gaskets. They did NOT machine the heads. The car came back a mess. Grease all over the fenders and hood. Antifreeze all over the engine compartment, things not put back together as designed. Clamps on hoses not in place, parts missing, etc. I was very unhappy with the state of the vehicle when I picked it up. The cost was supposed to be 1850.00 but the dealer kicked in $500.00 toward the repair. I called 1-800subaru3 and they declined to assist in paying for the repairs. I'm not sure I can trust this vehicle any longer. Parts replaced: 4 Gasket spark plug, 2 gasket cylinder head, 2 gasket rocker cover 2 Gasket intake manifold, 1 oil filter, 5 5W30 oil, 2 Super coolant, 1 thermostat gasket, 5 studs, 1 radiator assy.

98270 mi

C $600
The subi dealer found the secondary air injection valve on the driver's side siezed closed and quoted $1,100 to replace it. No guarantee would be offered other than this will happen again and it can be expected to happen on the other side too. It will cost an extra $300 for the other side because the intake manifold will have to be removed for access. I was told it was due to corrossion caused by bad design. I found a shop in Montreal that would remove the entire system including the two vaves and the pump for $600 and the guarantee that the problem would not repeat and that the car would pass emission testing because that is done on a warm engine. The system functions for less than a minute as part of the cold start-up sequence.
99 mi

C $200
I replaced a number of heat shields on the exhaust system.
100 mi

C $270
The ventilation fan was replaced as the lower bearing was shot. It was rusty due to a bad design which did not have a drain hole where the lower bearing sits. I drilled a small hole in the housing of the new one to prevent a replay of this stupid failure.
109 mi

C $1100
Replaced the wheel brg for the second time. Replaced the lower front left A arm and sway bar links. Carried out the passenger side air bag replacement for the second time. I supplied the brg, a good jobber unit not in a Subi box.
102 mi

C $350
After several years of annual brake maintence in order to avoid siezed pistons and pins I experienced a dragging brake on the front right whilst on a trip away from home. Did not like that. Got infamous P0011/P0021 codes for this model suggesting oil flow problems in engine, usually indicative of clogging of filter screen in banjo bolt of oil supply line to turbo. No poor idle or power problems indicative of OCV solenoid clogging/sticking. Banjo bolt was replaced as existing one was clogged despite religious oil/oil filter changes. I flushed the oil in the engine and then did an oil/filter change. Will have to see if codes return in the future. Hope that this does not portend turbo failure, although at 150K on original turbo am planning the possibility if codes return or hear increasing turbo whine/ whistle.

In the end, a throttle valve (or somethin like that) was replaced. NOTE: in the end the garage searched for free, checking and cleaning all electric contacts which did solve the problem!! Oooofffff, cause I really like this car UPDATE 1/10/2017: The number of power losses reduced, but the problem is not solved yet!!
