Why the 2010 Subaru Outback?

Driving position & visibility

The Outback has great seating and plenty of room for 4 adults. Nice visibility for a crossover. Long trips are without fatigue.

Exterior styling

Nice without a lot of extra attention. Roof crossbars are great.

Cargo capacity

Perfect size for the 2 of us and friends.

Why Not the 2010 Subaru Outback?

Powertrain performance

Transmission has issues, the TCM has been reflashed 4 times. We've been told that there is not a fix and will not be a recall since it is not a 'safety issue'. Glad we leased it because it is going back; had it been a reliable vehicle we would have purchased at the end of lease. We knew a first model year had risks but never expected this.

Handling

Weak spot. We did not expect it to handle like our German car but it is weak in the turns, especially at speed in the mountains.

Tires

The Continental's started 'bulging' on the inside sidewalls at 11K miles. I am ridiculous about maintaining correct air pressure monthly for both cars. Continental would not replace only adjust. I replaced them with Pirelli P4's. No issues after 8K miles. Also, much quieter and vibrations subsided too. Crap tires are unacceptable on a $34K vehicle.

Feature availability

Lack of memory seats. Given that my wife and I switch cars periodically it did not seem like an issue at the time. The price point of this vehicle though should include the feature.
