Why the 2012 Subaru Outback?

Powertrain performance

Had a 2010 Forester with the 2.5 4cyl and auto. Hated it. Test drove the Outback with the 3.6R 6cyl and 5 spd auto. Love it! Great power and the transmission is so smooth. Just wish I could shift gears from the gear selector and didn't have to use paddles.

Cargo capacity

I use this car for work. I do design and managing for a remodeling company. The cargo room is great for all of the samples I need to provide my customers. When I need to tow something I use a truck, though I theory I could tow 3000 lbs. I am not one to find out, when a diesel truck is at my disposal.

Safety & braking

The AWD system is awesome! With Blizzack tires i purchased used off craigslist and its ground clearance it is very sure footed in Alaskan winters.

Reliability & durability

I have nearly 30,000 miles and other than oil changes and other Subaru recommended service zero issues. I am just not noticing that my brakes aren't as strong as they once were, will probably have the pads replaced next service interval.

Front seat support & comfort

I am a big guy. 5'10 and about 290 lbs. This car is very comfortable for me. I can reach the controls nicely, love the heated leather seats.

Why Not the 2012 Subaru Outback?

Dealer practices

Always have had great sales experience at the local Subaru dealership. I have purchased a Mazda, a Ford and now two Subaru's. The service writers could be friendlier, more helpful and respond quicker. Being the only Subaru dealership in Alaska's largest city they get away with a lot of crappy attitudes. No issues with the actual work performed though.

Fuel economy

I have a lead foot. I guess for the power it has 20 mpg avg isn't bad, but not great.

Audio & nav systems

Tried out the navigation on a test drive. Skip that. I much prefer my top model Garmin nav. I have the Harmon Kardon premium sound and it is decent as long as the bass is turned down.

Discounts & incentives

Local dealership does not like to haggle on prices.

Driving position & visibility

Worse visibility of any car i've owned. I fear every time I change lanes. If your looking at a 2013 get all of the safety options if you can.
