Subaru Reliability and Durability: Pros | ||
Year | Body/Powertrain | Comment |
2013 | 4dr Hatch 154-horsepower 2.0L H4 6-speed shiftable CVT AWD |
Subaru is legendary for the durability & craftsmanship of the engine, powertrain, and vehicle frame. The interior may not be luxury, but that's fine by me. see full Subaru review |
2012 | 4dr Hatch 148-horsepower 2.0L H4 6-speed shiftable CVT AWD |
Ultimately it was Subaru's predicted reliability past 50,000 miles that had us make our final decision between this car and a Volkswagen (Jetta or Passat). see full Subaru review |
2012 | 4dr Sedan 170-horsepower 2.5L H4 6-speed shiftable CVT AWD |
We keep cars for 10 years or more. I expect to drive this one for the next 15. see full Subaru review |
2012 | 4dr Wagon 256-horsepower 3.6L H6 5-speed shiftable automatic AWD |
I have nearly 30,000 miles and other than oil changes and other Subaru recommended service zero issues. I am just not noticing that my brakes aren't as strong as they once were, will probably have the pads replaced next service interval. see full Subaru review |
2011 | 4dr Hatch 170-horsepower 2.5L H4 4-speed shiftable automatic AWD |
I have had zero issues with this car, it performs well for me day in and day out without fail. I love it and I am proud to say I own a Subaru. see full Subaru review |

2011 | 4dr Wagon 170-horsepower 2.5L H4 6-speed shiftable CVT AWD |
I just took my 2011 Outback 2.5 Limited in for its timing belt. I have 105,230 miles on the car and bought it new. It is hard to think this car was anything but a great purchase decision. $30 in repairs (gas cap, wasn't stranded) was all I've spent. I had a 2009 Jetta TDI before despite the mileage of the TDI, the Outback is much cheaper to drive. I have purchase a new battery, changed the differential fluid for the 3rd time and use Mobil 1 syth+filter every 7500 mi. Changed the spark plugs at 60k. Don't. Waste of time. They looked brand new. Will do again every 100k. Air filters every 20-30k. Headlights are a pain to change (Youtube). Mine lasted 60k. Guessing the shop will tell me when I need brakes. I think it will be a while still. see full Subaru review |
Subaru Reliability and Durability: Cons | ||
Year | Body/Powertrain | Comment |
2021 | 4dr Sedan turbocharged 260hp 2.4L H4 8-speed shiftable CVT AWD |
The car feels durable and generally reliable, but expect some software glitches and likely more small issues than one may encounter in a Toyota. I still feel their cars to be more reliable than any American car though, and given the cars seem to have more thoughtfulness in their design/engineering I find this to be a worthwhile tradeoff.
---
Subaru seems to have struggled with their build consistency as demand for their vehicles has surged. Avoiding the first model years is a safe bet.
---
We have our first dealer visit next week for some defects that will be handled under warranty. Here's what that will cover:
|
2011 | 4dr SUV 170-horsepower 2.5L H4 4-speed shiftable automatic AWD |
Not impressed thus far. Has consumed far too much oil for a new vehicle. Dealership inspected for leaks; they did not find any. They stated the oil consumption (about three quarts every 4000 miles) is typical. Subaru Of America was no help. see full Subaru review |
2010 | 4dr Wagon 170-horsepower 2.5L H4 6-speed shiftable CVT AWD |
No repairs needed except for headlamp bulbs and my brakes are still almost new after 78,000 miles. see full Subaru review |
2008 | 4dr Hatch turbocharged 305hp 2.5L H4 6-speed manual AWD |
Sub had some issues with the 08 tune for the sti. They where prone to cracking the piston rings in sustained high rpm use. This is not a good thing !! They have since done a service recall to fix this issue. see full Subaru review |
2007 | 4dr Wagon 175-horsepower 2.5L H4 4-speed shiftable automatic AWD |
I do have some reliability concerns, as this engine is notorious for head gasket problems. I noticed that my coolant tank was empty a couple weeks ago. I'm going to track it closely now, but I will be very disappointed if I have to do major work on this engine (head gaskets). see full Subaru review |
2005 | 4dr Wagon 168-horsepower 2.5L H4 5-speed manual AWD |
Anecdotal reports of engine head gasket problems made me wary. see full Subaru review |
2005 | 4dr Sedan turbocharged 250hp 2.5L H4 5-speed manual AWD |
Many more problems than any other Subaru I have owned. Lots of fit and finish issues along with failing wheel bearings and bad fuel injectors. see full Subaru review |
2004 | 4dr SUV turbocharged 210hp 2.5L I4 4-speed automatic AWD |
Subarus are known for their Japanese make and reliability. But in the year I have owned this car, I have had anything but reliability. In twelve months, the car has been drivable for only 6. And even when it is drivable, it stalls, bucks, and gives a general feel that is not one of confidence. see full Subaru review |
2002 | 4dr Wagon 165-horsepower 2.5L H4 4-speed automatic AWD |
Annual repairs have nearly doubled price paid for vehicle; substantial engine problems; none of the 4 recalls addressed engine issues. see full Subaru review |
