Best Reason to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Exterior styling
Rugged looking, offroad capability

Best Reason Not to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Powertrain performance
Bought this car from a "large and reputable" Jim Pattison Toyota dealership in May with good faith and confidence, looking forward to years of adventures and enjoyment. Odometer showing 141000 when I picked it up, supposed to be low for a Toyota.

But.........transmission simply gave up on my 31st day of ownership, after 2200 kilometer of highway driving and less than 50km of not-so-rough dirt road. It lived in the shop for 3 weeks and I just got it back yesterday with a rebuilt transmission and new torque converter.

Global Warranty is supposed to pay the repair bill but the shop manager is still struggling with them on the payment issue.

Here is my advice: If you are thinking about buying any Toyota, buy it with model year earlier than 2000 and make sure its built in Japan.

Best Reason to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Reliability & durability
This thing is over-the-top-reliable. I take it off-road, slam the under-belly on to rocks, bull it over large stones like a Hummer, pull over 10,000 lbs for drives well over 2 hours (it stinks of sulfer on the hills but...) - only in shop for oil/brakes.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Dealer practices
The big hit on these trucks is the dealer network. I personally hate Toyota dealers. I have had a lot of Toyotas and only ever change the oil and the odd air fllter - never did the scheduled stuff and then lasted for ever.

Best Reason to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Exterior styling
Robust and desirable styling, will stand the test of time like older Landcruisers. Form follows function overall. Classy yet low key demeanor. Definitely a masculine design with restraint. 2010 and newer more "butch" and stylized.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Fuel economy
If fuel cost is a concern, then this is definitely not the vehicle to have. Manages 18mpg combined if driven carefully. Does what it does extremely well so nothing unexpected.

Other Reasons to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Powertrain performance, Ride smoothness, Materials & workmanship, Quietness

Best Reason to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Powertrain performance
The 4Runner is a fantastic "go anywhere" vehicle..IF you need that sort of thing.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Fuel economy
The dash readout is optimistic. I often though I was getting over 25mpg only to calculate as low as 14--on the highway! Ultimately, this was the 4Runners undoing. I traded it for a much more efficient Camry.

Best Reason Not to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Handling
The base SR5 will not go in a straight line, it leans like a boat around curves and dives when braking.

2nd 4runner. Had no issues with the first at 189,000 miles. Feel safe taking this car out in the sticks, and down the highway

Best Reason to Buy the Toyota 4Runner: Reliability & durability
Like the new body style and ride, very smooth for a truck. Gas mileage with the new 6 seems to be very good for such a large truck so far. The seating is spacious and the hvac works well for such a large seating area. The features on the limited exceed
