On the 14th. of December we gave a stranded motorist a boost.
On the morning of Dec. 17th. the car started fine but within >1km the engine stopped and wouldn't restart w/o a boost. Lather the day I was able to start the car but the electrical system went awry. In that lights went on and off and then the engine quit again. Something that has never occurred prior to this incident.
After having CAA perform a battery check and determining that it was ok, I decided to have it towed to our independent garage.
My mechanic hypothesized that it may be the battery. It was removed and put on an overnight trickle charge. In the interim, the alternator was tested and was unable to produce sufficient voltage.
The next day the battery proved to be in good working order and no replacement required.
However, the far more costly repair was to replace the alternator. Unfortunately on a 6 cyl. Camry the radiator has to be moved in order to do so. Thereby adding a significant amount of labour time.
Our mechanic believes that the boost given with our engine running caused an electrical spike that overwhelmed the alternator. In future boosts should only be given with the host engine off... An expensive lesson!
