Why the Toyota Camry?
Quietness: Extremely quiet interior, hardly any engine or road noise. This is one of the quietest cars I've ever driven, impressive for a 4-cylinder. Perfect for long trips on the freeway.
Ride smoothness: The smoothest riding mid-size sedan. Very comfortable on the highway, absorbs bumps without feeling float-y.
Powertrain performance: NVH levels very low. Engine is incredibly smooth and quiet for a four-cylinder, sometimes it feels like a V6. Not fast, but powerful enough for any everyday situation.
Past personal experience: Owned used Toyota/Lexus models in the past (Avalon and ES300) - loved them both so decided to go with another Toyota. Camry is much cheaper new than an ES350 or Avalon, better value given that it is almost as large/nice.
Control design: Simple, clean center stack. Everything is in the same place it was on my old Toyotas. Doesn't look fancy or futuristic, but it's functional and easy to use.
Why Not the Hyundai Sonata?
Price or payments: Dealer was not willing to negotiate at all. Such is often the problem with a brand new model that is high in demand.
Exterior styling: Nice looking car, but too flashy for my taste. I like subtle, subdued style - I prefer to go "under the radar", which the Camry does much better.
Interior styling: Too busy and complicated. Some details were interesting, but overall it felt too much like a spaceship. The swoopy styling of dashboard and center console ate up leg room for the front seats and made the car feel cramped.
Quietness: More road and engine noise than the Camry - suspension twanged loudly over bumps and expansion joints, and the engine sounded coarse at higher RPM.
Powertrain performance: A bit faster than the Camry, but much louder and the power delivery is not as smooth and seamless. Hyundai needs to refine their 4-cylinder more if they're not going to offer any V6.
Why the Toyota Camry?
Reliability & durability: Bullet proof reputation and easy access to dealer if there is an issue. Have never had a problem with a Toyota vehicle.
Why the Toyota Camry?
Brand reputation & image: Despite the recalls Toyota remains a brand with excellent reliability and dependability. Both the dealer and Toyota have gone to great lengths to ensure I was satisfied before and after the sale. Resale value has been consistently high.
Why the Toyota Camry?
Fuel economy: First tank of gas yielded 28.75 MPG--not bad considering mix of city and rural with no long constant cruise. Also ambient temperature was from 5-20 degrees.
Why the Toyota Camry?
Color choices: Allows multiple choices in interior colors that all brands don't. Colors tend to enhance one another and not clash.
Why the Volkswagen Passat?
Rear seat room & comfort: Older teenagers like the extra room
Dealership practices: Toyota dealer was unprofessional and fit stereotypical sleazy sales hype, didn't know the product, trashed competition. VW dealer acted likes normal pros all the till they tried to push warranty
Handling: Solid driving experience
Discounts & incentives: Supplier discount
Exterior styling: Camry looks dated and confused
Why Not the Toyota Camry?
Exterior styling: Dated and confused
Interior styling: Two tone seats turn off
Handling: Was good
Dealership practices: Total jerks
Reliability & durability: Know it would last , Leary of buying the VW
Why the Hyundai Sonata?
Handling: The SE Turbo Sonata out handles and powers most cars and all in it's class. It has a sport-tuned suspension and steering system ONLY on the SE's and deleted on Limiteds. I also drive a 370Z Nissan and it handles much like it, honestly. 30mpg avg.
Exterior styling: It's gorgeous! The 18inch wheels and body shape make it really stand out. MANY people stop and comment on it. Friends and coworkers stand and gawk at it, even the Mercedes and Lexus drivers. I'm often told it looks "wicked", "hot",
Interior styling: The 2012 Camry and Accord have interiors way out of date in comparison. Some say here it is "too complex" or "spaceship like" but that's no prob once you learn the car. Black or wine interior is best and the sport seats are amazingly c
Warranty, scheduled maintenance cost: 10yr/100,000m power train warranty, 5yr/60,000m bumper to bumper warranty, 7yr/unlimited mile anti-perforation warranty (2 more yrs than Toyota or Honda and 1 more than Lexus!) 5yr/unlimited roadside assistance (ZERO for Toyota/Honda, 1 more than Lexus)
Available features: LOADED with ALL the bells and whistles you'd pay A LOT extra for on it's competitors. Nissan, Honda and Toyota make you add pricey package after package for what comes standard here. To be fair, to get the sunroof, you HAVE to add the NAV pack.
Why Not the Toyota Camry?
Interior styling: WAY out of date! My 1995 Avalon Ltd. had the SAME exact power window switches and wiper/turn stalks. The plastics are "okay" but not soft touch in many places as in the Sonata. IPOD doesn't function as well. Lack of ambient overhead lighting.
Powertrain performance: Even the SE V6 is disappointing in comparison. Drive both and see. The Sonata's 4cyl. turbo is quicker, stronger, and still returns better REAL-WORLD gas mileage than either Camry powertrain. Camry has ZERO road feedback and is hard to drive passionat
Price or payments: Why pay more for less?????
Warranty, scheduled maintenance cost: MUCH better warranty on the Sonata.
Exterior styling: Yawn. It looks the same as the other billion boring Camry's out there. The 2012's are a joke! It looks JUST like a Corolla to almost everyone and you can't tell them apart on the road without a close inspection. Did I mention it's boring a
Why the Honda Accord?
Price or payments: Got 2.9 APR for 5 Years (0.9 APR was also available for 3 Years)
Discounts & incentives: Got good deal on 2008 model because of clearance sale.
Available features: VSA with TRAC - standard.
VCM on V6 models - Cool feature.
Remote Window Control - standard.
Interior is more roomy & fresh than of camry's.
Reliability & durability: Accord is very reliable & durable. I know people who have more than 150k miles on their accord. So, I had to think very little about its reliability & durability.
Brand reputation & image: Honda is know for its quality worldwide. Accord is established brand from last many years, so I hadto think very little about it.
Why Not the Toyota Camry?
Available features: VSA with TRAC - have to pay more.
VCM feature is not there on Camry V6.
Remote Window Control - not available on Camry.
Discounts & incentives: Only $500 was available for 1 week.
Interior styling: It depends on personal preference. I like accord's interior better than of camry.
Price or payments: Camry's out the door price was more by 5k+. APR was also very high.
Why the Ford Taurus?
Handling: Safe, predictable handling, and ESC is available. Does not have a sporty feel, but that is desirable for us because one driver is a teenage boy.
Safety & braking: The Taurus has outstanding crash test scores in the IIHS and NHTSA tests, perhaps the best of any moderately priced car. The Volvo-based chassis is a plus, and ours has ESC. We have a beginning driver, and this car shouldn't inspire wild driving.
Driving position & visibility: Excellent visibility all around, with an especially high seating position for a sedan (one of the drivers is quite short). The big greenhouse, while not very stylish, makes the car feel less cramped, unlike many cars that have a higher beltline.
Rear seat room & comfort: One of the few cars we encountered with a rear seat that all family members found comfortable. Huge amounts of legroom, and again, the large greenhouse means that rear seat passengers don't feel as if they are in a tunnel.
Cargo capacity & towing: Huge, well shaped trunk, about as big as you can get in a sedan. The ability to fold down the rear seats and the front passenger seat is nice as well.
Why Not the Toyota Camry?
Rear seat room & comfort: The taller family members found the seat uncomfortable -- I'm not sure if it was the length of the seat cushion or the rake of the back. Room is adequate, however.
Driving position & visibility: I just couldn't get comfortable! Rear visibility only fair due to fairly large rear pillars and higher beltline.
Cargo capacity & towing: Trunk only average sized, not much bigger than some compacts.
Safety & braking: Felt less safe due to somewhat vague or numb steering, and handling felt light and a bit mushy. Many Camrys not equipped with ESC. Poor rear crash tests with IIHS.
Front seat comfort: Just could not get comfortable.
Why the Honda Accord?
Brand reputation & image: As said, Honda is known for its quality worldwide.
Accord is established brand from last many years.
So, I had to little think about it.
Why the Toyota Camry?
Handling: Handling vastly improved. Tighter sprung. feels like it has some "gravitas"
Powertrain performance: CVT is quiet and doesn't windup when accelerating - always engaged.
Fuel economy: gas won.t stay where it is. A 40% increase in mpg will pay off in less than 6 years
Why Not the Toyota Camry?
Front seat comfort: front seat could be improved for better thigh support for tall drivers
Driving position & visibility: excellent visisbitly
Handling: see prior page
Fuel economy: see prior page
Why the Toyota Camry?
Brand reputation & image: Toyota consistently in top 5 JD Powers brands. Friends owning Toyota vehicles have had stellar performance. Important for a road car we plan to drive 10 yrs + more around town. I have had good pas luck w/Chrysler but 2012 cars like 200 not fit my needs.
Front seat comfort: We will use this as a "road car" on longer trips so front seat comfort along with interior -and- trunk room is very good, better than Kia Optima considered. Two large adults comment rear seat also very comfortable. Front seat easier exit too.
Fuel economy: There is a bug in this SW, it removed ALL my "like" comments!!
Will redo best can remember for my XLE 4 cyl w/leather/conv pkg/entune. Measured actual mpg 33 in mixed hwy/city driving first tank 210 miles. Got 40mpg best case 70mph 40 mi no wind
Warranty, scheduled maintenance cost: To me this Total Cost of Ownership & sched maint in 10 yrs gave the Camry a solid yes vs close runner up Subaru Legacy (has poor tires vs Mich Primacy, lots of oil, plug, differential lubes), VW Passat diesel adblue & expensive VW only oil chgs.
Insurance & depreciation: This new Camry XLE insurance costs less than our 8 year old Chrysler 300 did and is less than competitive vehicles. Depreciation less of a concern for car I plan to "drive into the ground".
Why Not the Toyota Camry?
Available features: The side mirrors are small, need BSM option or a small convex mirror installed. Auto lights don't come on w/wipers (but DRLs always on). Carpet real thin for a deluxe XLE, no floor mats in pkg (but competitors don't supply them either).
Audio & nav systems: The grey XLE in stock my wife liked came w/Nav/Entune. Nav easy to use, but Entune TBD. Both my Samsung Stratosphere & son's Nexus work OK w/Entune, Toyota sites says they won't. All searches put adrs into Nav, nice feature!
Why the Toyota Camry?
Price or payments: It was lease takeover. $149mo. for 11 months with a $13.3 buyout/resell
Fuel economy: 34mpg on regular
Why Not the Toyota Camry?
Driving position & visibility: Everything! Poor visibility to the rear. B pillars block view of oncoming traffic. Windshield rake is too steep for this driver.
Safety & braking: Visibility is poor, brakes are grabby, high wind noise,
tranny clunks on downshifts with only 30K on the odo.
Front seat comfort: Very noisy at high way speeds.
Materials & workmanship: Cheap! plastic everywhere, front seats are brutal and the seat covering is cheap.Paint is thin.
Why the Toyota Camry?
Fuel economy: I average between 31 and 35.4 MPG which is more than twice what my SUV gets! I have "learned" how to drive in a more fuel efficient way using the MPG gauge and the fuel economy charts built into the Nav unit.
Interior styling: The comfort and flow of the leather and the electronics. Everything inside feels like it was well-researched and gives a wonderful driving experience. The air conditioning vents for the passengers in the back seat and the roominess were big factors for me
Audio & nav systems: The JBL factory stereo is much nicer than ANY aftermarket pioneer or alpine I have ever owned. I own a DJ business and run all BOSE equipment and I am very picky about sound - The Navigation being fully integrated with blue tooth phone is a huge plus!
Ride smoothness: I test drove many hybrids before buying the TCH and I felt the Accord had the best ride UNTIL I drove the Camry. I drove the 4 cyl., the V6, and the Hybrid Camrys, and they all felt tight to the road and well engineered.
Quietness: The road noise is extremely low and does not require drowning out with the stereo.
Why Not the Toyota Camry?
Dealership practices: I went to 8 TOYOTA dealerships before finding one that didn't feel like they were trying to take advantage of me. Most dealerships felt shady and fake, especially the sales managers. The dealer I finally used fired our salesman shortly after the sale.
Why the Toyota Camry?
Fuel economy: Although rated at 32/34 the reports list the mileage as higher
