Volkswagen Jetta Lemon Odds and Nada Odds through March 31, 2013
General NotesNote the sample sizes in the right column. For a precise Nada Odds, it'd be best to have 50+ cars. For Lemon Odds, 100+. In most cases the sample sizes are between 25 and 35, and differences of less than six points are probably not meaningful. This is especially a factor with the "Lemon Odds," where nearly all scores are low. That said, the Lemon Odds figures are probably much lower than many people suspected, so we've posted them. Similarly, the Nada Odds are probably higher than many people suspected. Even with the least reliable cars in this results set your odds of no repairs would be better than one in three. Surprised? MethodologyThe samples include cars for which we have at least nine months of data in the past year. The "Nada-odds" are adjusted based on the average number of months of data per car. These stats are very close to what they'd be if we included only cars with a full year of data.
Only successfully completed repairs are currently included in the analysis. Recalls and problems fixed with just a reflash or warning light reset are not included.

It's been interesting to see the mixed reactions I get when people learn that I bought a VW. I'm known for my research-minded ways when it comes to big decisions, so I think the reliability (or lack thereof) reputation that Volkswagen has caused people to be surprised by my purchase. But for as many horror stories that I've read or heard, I've also heard from many owners who swear by and love their VWs and have had minor to no issues. Given how in love with my car I am after just one week...I get why VW owners love their cars (but, I'll admit, I still have my fingers crossed that I won't be plagued with too many quirks or issues). |
| 2008 | 4dr Sedan 170-horsepower 2.5L I5 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD |
VW/Audi has a reputation of poor reliability and expensive to service. |
| 2007 | 4dr Sedan 150-horsepower 2.5L I5 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD |
I'm a little worried about how it'll hold up, due to VW's reputation. |
| 2006 | 4dr Sedan turbocharged 100hp 1.9L I4 Diesel 5-speed manual FWD |
More work is needed to convince public that VW is a reliable brand. |
| 2006 | 4dr Sedan 150-horsepower 2.5L I5 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD |
VW gets a bad reputation for reliability and quality though they build an excellent vehicle in terms of safety, handling and fun to drive. |
| 2006 | 4dr Sedan turbocharged 100hp 1.9L I4 Diesel 5-speed manual FWD |
That people automatically assume that all VWs are unreliable just because they had problems with their cars in the late 90s/early 00s. The new Jetta and Rabbit are MUCH better than they used to be. The TDIs especially are very reliable. |
| 2003 | 4dr Wagon turbocharged 90hp 1.9L I4 Diesel 5-speed manual FWD |
Image of a good car, well built, good handling with lackluster dealer service leads to uninspiring owner experience for many. |
| 2002 | 4dr Sedan turbocharged 90hp 1.9L I4 Diesel 5-speed manual FWD |
