The transmission would make a hard knock when shifting in and out of Park, Drive ..etc. The knocking went away after 10-15 minutes of driving, disappearing completely. 170-horsepower 2.5L I5 5-speed manual FWD

16000 mi Knocking/rattling of transmission when clutch is disengaged (in). VW dealer diagnosed as worn out throwout bearing which also caused damage to a shift fork. Both replaced with new OEM parts. VW also recommended and replaced new clutch kit.
16800 mi While in motion, a whirring sound starts when sliding the gear lever into first gear, that continues while in first gear. Increases in pitch. Very distinctive downshifting at 15mph. Dealer dismissed as a characteristic of 1st gear.
95000 mi

diagnosis of loud engine area noise while driving. Shop dropped the axle, which narrowed down the noise to the transmission. Transmission test showed a small amount of metal flakes in the transmission fluid. Shop said repair not necessary now as transmission shifts fine, but will keep an eye on it.
