Why the 2004 Volkswagen Passat?

Past personal experience

Very low ownership cost, very reliable when serviced OUTSIDE of dealer network by experienced mechanic. Very durable. Everything works as expected all the time. Great attention to detail, great interior. Availability of parts outside dealer network.

Handling

Extremely stable regardless of road conditions, confidence inspiring. No surprises. Not autocross handling, but very predictable. Rear end stays planted.

Ride smoothness

Despite handling, always comfortable, quiet despite the worst roads.

Front seat support & comfort

Makes my bad back feel better. Large, supportive seat for large person. Plenty of room to move feet around during trips. Lots of adjustments.

Materials & workmanship

Although chromed plastic trim outside looks poor, remainder of car looks new. Interior has quality looks. Some of wood trim is actual wood. Leather lasts forever with care, everything matches, plastic does not look cheap.

Why Not the 2004 Volkswagen Passat?

Dealer practices

VW dealers never compromise nor discount. Expect every visit to cost over $500, even under warranty. Labor is twice what I pay elsewhere, parts 2 to 5 times more, actually higher than list. May not fix it right first time. Excessive charges.

Fuel economy

I expected 23-24 overall, and 26-28 highway. I get 25 highway and 22 overall, tops. Have to use premium or a mix of plus and premium. Tank is small.
