Turns out I probably could have driven with the problem as long as seal didn't break but didn't know that, so considered it an emergency situation. Oil cooler rubber seal was cracked, resulting in loss of oil pressure. Repair involved pressure test before and after, removal of entire cooler, engine flush and oil change, and replacement of seal, which was apparently known to be faulty.
