2004 Volkswagen Passat Horror Story

This car sucks all together. I can honestly say the best thing I actually like about this car was the gas milage and even that wasn't that good. The car always had problems. if it wasn't one thing it is another. The oil sludge problems on these cars are horrific and VW should be ashamed. I don't mind having to pay for the most expensive oil but the sludge still occured after that. When I tried to get mecahnics to fix my issues only limited mechanics would take a chance with it. I'm glad I finally called it quits and just dumped it off to a dealership.

Conclusion

This car is not worth having.

Synthethic oil alone is not enough to prevent coking and/or sludging. You also need to maintain the PCV system, which is subject to clogs and leaks. Even Toyota had oil sludge problems with some of their early 2000s V6 engines, because of PCV issues.

We bought our 2001 Passat wagon because the size and configuration were -- and still are -- unmatched by anything else on the market. Fortunately, my sons and I do much of our own car work, which helps keep ownership costs at bay. The Passatworld, VW Vortex, and Ross-Tech technical forums have saved us tons of money and aggravation.
