Why the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg?

Handling

I average 100km a day driving to and from work on the freeway and love how it drives and handles. Long country trips are also great.

Powertrain performance

This car was chosen as it has a good performance base compared to other SUVs with similar engines.

Cargo capacity

This car handles most things. Put down some protection for the floor and sided and fill it with wood, bricks, large boxes. It is great for travelling.

Why Not the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg?

Reliability & durability

This car has major reliability issues. I have not driven a car with such few km that has had so many problems. Drive shafts, leaking engine seals, EGR valves, leaking sump plug, mirrors not working, hand brake buzzer going on and off, engine warning lights going on one day off the next. I had a VW Superbug in the 70's which nealy sent me broke with heads going and I swore never another VW. The Toureg looked like a good compromise for on and off road but it is too unreliable to take any distance aware from a major centre. If I go country I take my 30 year old classic as it is more reliable.

Dealer practices

Dealer wanted to charge me $4500 for the auxiliary drive shaft replacement which I had done by a Euro Specialy repair shop for $1300. Next time I willdo it myself with parts out of the US. $85 for a wiper blade - you must be kidding. My Porsche is only $30 for a set ex US

Audio & nav systems

No bluetooth or auxiliary plugin for music in a 2008 vehicle when cheap imports have had them in for 3 - 5 years. I knew this when I bought it and have replaced the audio system but it was surprising.

Other Features of the 2008 Volkswagen Touareg

Reliability & durability

Too many known issues now I would be looking at another vehicle. Probably Japanese. Audi, Porsche and VW all out of same factory so not sure about their reliability. No dealer support for known problems in Australia.
