Have almost completed 11 months. Till now no major breakdown or service requirements... Will be able to comment after 24 months of use. However, preventive maintenance cost stings a bit

2000 4dr Sedan turbocharged 268hp 2.8L I6
4-speed shiftable automatic FWD
previous owner put in trans, throttle body, brake module, strut and supp, I replaced siren (caused sys malfunc), melted term in main fuse box, cam actuator, re-wrapped wire harness in engine compartment due to excessive heat, lower control arms, tie rods

Volvo S40 Reliability and Durability: Cons
YearBody/PowertrainComment
2002 4dr Sedan turbocharged 160hp 1.9L I4
5-speed automatic FWD
After 75k miles the dealer who sold it to me and where I had been servicing it told me I should get rid of it. The problem is sludge due to infrequent oil changes. The check engine light keeps coming on. This first happened before 40k miles.
2002 4dr Wagon turbocharged 160hp 1.9L I4
5-speed automatic FWD
In general the car is well built, durable, and for the most part reliable. However, The electrical/electronic system is over-engineered, prone to failure, and expensive to repair (alternator $800!).
