2013 Hyundai Sonata

4dr Sedan 198-horsepower 2.4L I4 6-speed shiftable automatic FWD

Why the Hyundai Sonata?

Fuel economy: With just over 1400 miles so far, it is averaging 28.3mpg combined with the eco option turned off. It has the eco drive option which works well in sustained at speed driving but lags in demanding driving situations.

Handling: Steering and handling is excellent.

Cargo capacity & towing: Pass through rear seating from trunk comes in handy. I was able to easily fit a 24 bicycle into the trunk with room to spare by dropping one of the rear seats while still having plenty of room for other packages, bags and a cooler.

Audio & nav systems: The premium audio w/400 watt 9 speaker Infinity sound system with sub woofer provides rich cabin filling audio without sacrificing driver control. If one chooses, however it can vibrate ones socks.

Feature availability: Vision around vehicle is good and the backup assist camera is a nice plus.

Why Not the Hyundai Sonata?

Powertrain performance: A bit underpowered but comparison is against a Maxima 3.5L. Still is fairly peppy and can be aggressive when needed.

Front seat support & comfort: Ride is comfortable but after about 2 or 3 hours, the leather seats get a bit hard on the butt.

Audio & nav systems: Navigation system confusing to operate and does weird things while trying to zoom in or out for clarity. Hard to get to the most critical commands in the navigation menu (I prefer my Magellan). Often doesn't accurately indicate turns.

Feature availability: No power passenger seat option. Also non-chrome wheels.
