Cargo capacity & towing: 3rd row seat is full bench seat and individual side can not be raised or lowered independently. Limits cargo capacity when up. |
Price or payments: Over priced because was new model at time I was looking. Configured with unwanted trim and features vs competition. |
Available features: 3rd row seating. |
Rear seat room & comfort: 3rd row seat is full bench seat and individual side can not be raised or lowered independently. Access and available room much less than MDX. |

2008 Acura MDX4-door SUV | > | 2008 Audi Q74-door SUV |
| Acura MDX: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Price or payments: Good value for a mid-sized luxury SUV |
Past personal experience: We've owned 6 Acuras between my wife and I, and all were dead-reliable, even up to 165K miles! |
Cargo capacity & towing: Well thought out, convenient features |
Quietness: Significantly quieter than the Q7, particularly under acceleration. |
Powertrain performance: Powerful, refined, relaxed engine |

| Audi Q7: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Price or payments: Pricey in comparison with the MDX and also the Mazda CX9, which we also considered |
Quietness: Noisy powertrain, particularly under acceleration. |
Insurance & depreciation: Audis have typically depreciated more than some other luxury brands. I don't think that this is justified, given the quality of the vehicles today, but it's reality. |
Reliability & durability: More niggling problems with our Audis, though we love driving them. |

2005 Acura MDX4-door SUV | > | 2005 Lexus RX4-door SUV |
| Acura MDX: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Cargo capacity & towing: cargo capacity was better than any other comparable SUV we looked at. with a dog taking up much of the cargo area, we needed lots of space. We've towed over 3500 # construction trailer with no problems. |
Handling: The only SUV we've driven that can walk itself right up our 25 degree (1/4 mile long)driveway with everything from 8 inches of snow (requiring the MDX to plow through it) and glare ice. The traction system is amazing. Also handles well on gravel & mud. |
Reliability & durability: We have 96k miles on it and nary a problem. She continues to be quite reliable and economical to maintain. We do not have it maintained at Acura, but rather a local quality repair shop. |
Safety & braking: Our previous one was totalled in a T-bone accident with a Suburban & everyone walked away unhurt. Quite remarkable. We drive very often on ICE and Snow and very slippery mud, and the braking is amazingly reliable in all kinds of nastry conditions. |
Powertrain performance: Powerful, fast, nimble, responsive. Almost feels like a sports-car; although, in turns the front-wheel bias tends to oversteer a bit. |

| Lexus RX: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Cargo capacity & towing: RX is a nice car, but has far too little cargo space. |
Handling: Handling of the RX is a bit soft for our taste. Not nearly as sporty and sure-footed as the Acura MDX. |
Dealership practices: We almost bought an RX in 2000, but got jerked around and manipulated by the dealer, so we walked away and bought a Mercury Mountaineer, which we love and still own (it has 136,000 miles on it & still running well). |
Driving position & visibility: Visibility out the back-sides is not as good as the Acura MDX |
Powertrain performance: Less sporty, less responsive than the Acura MDX |

2008 Mazda CX-94-door SUV | > | 2008 Acura MDX4-door SUV |
| Mazda CX-9: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Exterior styling: It looks sporty and modern, but not too flashy |
Handling: So smooth, No body roll into tight, fast corners. Handles like a smaller car. Responsive steering |
Driving position & visibility: very comfortable. Seat is so adjustable, steering wheel tilts and telescopes. Rear pillars do not hinder rear visibility |
Powertrain performance: Responsive transmission always keeps car in perfect gear. Excellent passing power, response at highway speeds. Smooth power uptake |

|---|
Exterior styling: Aggressive, bold styling |

| Acura MDX: Reasons not to buy |

Rear seat room & comfort: Claustrophic, unusable 3rd row, with immovable knee-wall |
Fuel economy: Gas engine does not achieve excellent mileage diesels provide |
Exterior styling: Bland, ho-hum styling |

2008 Volkswagen Rabbit4-door Hatch | > | 2008 Acura MDX4-door SUV |
| Volkswagen Rabbit: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Cargo capacity & towing: Folding the rear seats opens up over 40 cubic feet of rear space. The front passenger seat also folds down enabling me to put my 68" long road bike in whole. |
Price or payments: You can't beat it for around $20,000. |
Fuel economy: Not the best for a compact vehicle, but coming from a BMW 545i which got me 21 mpg using premium fuel, the Rabbit's 24 mpg using regular fuel sounds wonderful. |
Available features: For $20,000 you get 10 speaker stereo, lumbar support(a bit weak, I admit)for both driver and front passenger, tiptronic transmission, engine immobilization security, 4 years free road side assistance, brake pad wear indicator and tire pressure monitor. |
Handling: Has a 36 foot turning circle! Tight steering, great brakes. 5 cylinder engine is a lot of fun. |

| Acura MDX: Reasons not to buy |

Price or payments: They should make leases more affordable. |
Fuel economy: Gets only 17-18 mpg. |

2004 Infiniti FX35 / FX454-door SUV | > | 2007 Acura MDX4-door SUV |
| Infiniti FX35 / FX45: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Front seat comfort: More thigh support for taller driver |
Reliability & durability: Fewer non-maintenance trips to shop than MDX |
Past personal experience: Overall good. Good experience with Infiniti. Good experience with Dealer. Good experience with car. Not perfect, but better than Acura. |
Price or payments: Lower. I got more tech with the MDX, but FX's generally cost less than a comparably equipped MDX. |

| Acura MDX: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Front seat comfort: Not enough thigh support. |
Price or payments: Higher than FX |
Reliability & durability: Multiple trips to shop |
Past personal experience: Multiple shop trips. Having to buy entire packages for one appealing feature (automatic liftgate). Expensive. Acura dealer/shop not conveniently located. |

2008 Lexus GX4-door SUV | > | 2007 Acura MDX4-door SUV |
| Lexus GX: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Reliability & durability: I've owned several Lexus vehicles and have never had a mechanical failure or warranty claim of any kind. |
Quietness: It's the quietest SUV I've ever been in. |
Driving position & visibility: Easy to see what is going on around you. Could improve rearward visibility some with the third row seats. |
Ride smoothness: It's an SUV that rides like a luxury car. |
Dealership practices: Every Lexus dealer I've entered goes far beyond any other car make to welcome their customers and ensure they are taken care of. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Acura MDX: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Dealership practices: Unlike Lexus, the Acura dealer would not come get the MDX even when there was a warranty issue. Lexus will come 100+ miles to get my car for regular service and will leave me with a loaner car. |
Past personal experience: Too many warranty issues for a car that costs this much. I would have sold a car half this price given the same experiences. There is no luxury car experience. There are just luxury car amenities when they work. |
Exterior styling: Ugly front end. Otherwise, the styling is fine. |
Materials & workmanship: The interior did not hold up to normal wear and tear. The cargo area was permanently deformed from the weight of a child stroller. The running boards were scratched within the first two weeks of ownership. Interior trim scratched during normal cleaning |
Reliability & durability: Had to make 4 trips to the dealer for warranty issues in 18 months of ownership. |

Single Vehicle Reviews: Acura MDX Pros and Cons
2009 Acura MDX4-door SUV |
| Acura MDX: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Reliability & durability: I am not worried about breaking down or about expensive repairs. This is a vehicle I can keep with no worries. |
Materials & workmanship: I appreciate beautiful and finely made items. When I get into the MDX I always feel like I am in a beautiful machine with smooth action and a lets go attitude ! It puts a smile on my face every time! |
Driving position & visibility: I want to sit higher than a car so I can see better. The MDX gives excellent visibility from the side and back besides the front. It is an extremely comfortable sitting position for the driver. |
Powertrain performance: This may be a 6 cylinder engine but it is 300 horsepower. I want enough power to merge onto freeways with no problem plus it is just fun to have this kind of power in a larger vehicle !! |
Safety & braking: The larger size, greater view of the road and side and rear views give the driver a much more confident position to see and make choices. The brakes are so good , you feel like the car is lighter in weight than it is. i feel very safe in this car. |

2008 Acura MDX4-door SUV |
| Acura MDX: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Brand reputation & image: Bought MDX for its 4 wheel drive, especially the much touted super handling system. MDX provides good value for all the options which came with the vehicle. Acura name provides high end brand name. |
Available features: All the safety features, including ABS, traction control, stability control, etc, etc |
Exterior styling: Aggresive and macho loking look. |
Interior styling: Great comfort with the heated seats, roof, well layout control buttons, etc |
Safety & braking: Superb handling and great braking stops. |

2008 Acura MDX4-door SUV |
| Acura MDX: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Handling: SH-AWD sticks to the road like glue, even when wet or snowy. Minimal body roll in turns, sporty suspension does a reasonable job soaking up the bumps without detaching you from the road. |
Front seat comfort: It was the most comfortable of the vehicles we tested, including the Volvo XC90, Toyota Highlander Hybrid Limited, and Mazda CX-9 Grand Touring. Soft leather, supportive seats. |
Audio & nav systems: The tech package is full of features such as a 6-disc DVD MP3/WMV changer, solar GPS-linked temperature controls, 3 zone climate, and voice activation of many features. |
Brand reputation & image: It's an excellent mix of reliability, performance, and luxury |
Available features: There's a plethora of useful features, particularly focused around handling and technology. |

| Acura MDX: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Fuel economy: I have yet to see 15 city/20 hwy, even with 12k on the odometer and not driving it hard. 13/18 is more like it. |
Price or payments: A similarly equipped Mazda CX-9 was $4,500 less. |
