2009 Nissan Altima2-door Coupe | > | 2009 Dodge Charger4-door Sedan |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Exterior styling: Everything about the exterior is great. It is a very good design and is very sporty. |
Price or payments: I was able to get an Altima with options for what I perceived was a very good price. |
Front seat room: I am 6'5" and fit great in the Altima (I am more "leg" then "torso." I have driven many cars and finding one with lots of legroom can be difficult. |
Ride smoothness: This car rides great and yet keeps its sporty feeling. |
Fuel economy: This car gets excellent fuel economy. Previously owned SUV's and sports cars with thirty V6s so this will be a nice change. |

| Dodge Charger: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Fuel economy: The chager did not have appealing fuel economy. |
Insurance & depreciation: I didn't like how fast the Chargers depreciate. Slightly used Chargers (1 year with 5-8k miles) were selling half-off what the dealers wanted for new ones (after working them down for their "best" prices). |
Brand reputation & image: I previously owned a Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep product and just was not overly satisifed at the end (with the vehicle's problems, several dealerships and the Chrysler extended warranty employees who could be extremely rude). |
Price or payments: I didn't like how the cars were being listed with all of the incentives and when you go to make a deal suddenly they would come back and the cost kept getting higher and higher. It felt deceptive and left a bad taste for the entire Chrysler organization. |
Reliability & durability: I am beginning to read about some of the problems of the Chargers and there seems to be a number of them and they seem to be the same type of problems that Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep products have always been prone to... i.e. nothing changes! |

2009 Nissan Altima4-door Sedan | > | 2009 Toyota Camry4-door Sedan |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Powertrain performance: The 2.5 4 cyl drives more like a 6 cyl. You don't feel like your having to punish the car to get on the highway. |
Fuel economy: Best fuel economy in a mid-size sedan. I get over 31 MPG on the highway. |
Rear seat room & comfort: Comfortable for 6 ft adult. |
Control design: The intelligent key rocks. I love the push botton door & trunk request switches and the push button start. |
Exterior styling: Sporty styling but the 2.5 S should come with alloy wheels instead of hubcaps. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Toyota Camry: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Powertrain performance: You have to keep your foot on the floor to get the 4 cyl Camry to be responsive. Highway entrance ramps are not enjoyable. |
Handling: The steering and overall handling is way to numb. |

2008 Nissan Altima4-door Sedan | > | 2008 Mercury Milan4-door Sedan |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Driving position & visibility: Ditto. |
Interior styling: Controls are modern and make complete sense. Black with silver accents appeals to me. Audio controls on steering wheel. Huge glovebox and lots of other storage. |
Price or payments: Lower than what I was paying on old car! |
Front seat room: Very good for tall people, even with sunroof. Seat is adjustable in 3 directions plus lumbar support. |
Front seat comfort: I guess these first three are of a piece. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Mercury Milan: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Front seat room: My head was squashed into the roof. Could not adjust seat to find a tolerable position. |
Front seat comfort: I felt very constrained in all movements. |
Handling: Turning circle is very large. |
Control design: Looks outdated. Analog clock, stereo from 10 years ago. |
Quietness: Engine very loud on acceleration. |

2007 Nissan Altima4-door Sedan | > | 2007 Acura TSX4-door Sedan |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Interior styling: Big improvement over the outgoing model. Simplified controls for multiple applications. The Accord provides an absolute riot of switchgear to deal with essentially the same features. Godd quality materials throughout. Supremely comfortable seats. |
Brand reputation & image: Having owned a bullet-proof Maxima for 7 years, I am looking forward to more of the same from the Altima. So far, so good. |
Powertrain performance: Extremely strong performance from the 3.5l VQ motor. Excellent combination of low end pull (low speed cornders can be taken in 3rd gear) and top end rush. 30 mp cruising in 6th gear on the highway. |
Handling: Very precise and responsive for what is otherwise a perfectly mainstream family sedan. |
Exterior styling: Sporty and aggresive without being over the top. Doesn't look like every other bar of soap sedan on the road. |

| Acura TSX: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Powertrain performance: Nothing that another 50 hp wouldn't solve. Zippy for running around town, but there really is a noticeable power deficiency compared to other sporty sedans at this price point. |
Front seat room: Not enough of it. |
Rear seat room & comfort: Too small and cramped. My wife's Civic has more rear seat space. |
Cargo capacity & towing: Tiny trunk. Forget about taking the gold foursome in your ride. |
Price or payments: Just seemed a bit pricy for what you were getting, but ther was no faulting the overall quality feel and execution of all aspects of this vehicle. |

Comparisons: Nissan Altima Not Preferred
2009 Toyota Camry4-door Sedan | > | 2009 Nissan Altima4-door Sedan |
| Toyota Camry: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Cargo capacity & towing: My wife is handycapped and the trunk is large enough to carry a wheel chair. |
Price or payments: One of the biggest reasons for buying the Camry is that Toyota offers a disability reinbursment where they will pay for adaptive equipment added to the car. Now my wife will be able to drive. The Altima did not offer this. |
| Top of page ^ |
2008 Honda Accord2-door Coupe | > | 2008 Nissan Altima2-door Coupe |
| Honda Accord: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Reliability & durability: My father has owned an accord for 18 years. My father's 2nd accord, which was the 1st available v6 1995 honda accord, went 10 yrs 190,000 miles w/o ever changing timing belt. We believe in honda accord's. NUFF SAID |
Exterior styling: The car is just gorgeous. The v6 is about 2-3000 more but its worth the $$$. You get the chrome accent treatment on the door handles. The 18 in alloy wheels really stand out. The front of the car looks bad a$$. The car's lines & curves remind you of BMW. |
Materials & workmanship: The interior in the 08 accord is much better. my dad has an 07 accord & it feels cheap. Closing the doors feels like they're being slammed but they're not. The 2008 doors close quieter. the leather feels much more comfortable in the 2008 than 2007. |
Fuel economy: I avg 25 mpg where I live. For a v6 that's good. On the hwy especially long distances i'm getting 29 mpg. The cylinder deactivation really helps with saving gas. Plus the accord has an 18.5 gallon tank. I can go between 450 & 500 miles per fill-up. |
Quietness: The v6 has noise cancellation with the audio system while you're driving. Even without the audio the v6 is much quieter than the straight 4. The only time you'll ever hear the engine is if you try to floor it. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Price or payments: When I negotiated for the altima the cheapest the dealership would come down to was just over 25,000. It was the 2.5 sl package (leather, bose stereo, etc. For another 1,400 I bought the accord v6 with the premium stereo, leather, moonroof, etc. |
Rear seat room & comfort: The accord coupe has a little more room in the rear. There isn't a whopping advantage but when it comes to coupes an inch or two makes a difference. |
Powertrain performance: The CVT tranny to me is BS. It's noisy!! It struggled in Cali on hills and I just wasn't impressed considering the car was 2g's over the accord. It was hard for me to get the v6 under 28.5k; therefore, no value for the money. |
Materials & workmanship: Nissan uses cheaper plastics than honda does in their cars for 2008. The look and feel cheap. For a car that is about at least 25000 you shouldn't get really cheap plastic. I expect that on a car that is between 15 and 20,000. |
Control design: The altima's control design is simpler than the accord's but it's too damn boring and plain. Reviewers balked at the 08 accord's design for being too "fancy" but once you get to know it, it's just as simple. |

2009 Mitsubishi Lancer4-door Sedan | > | 2008 Nissan Altima2-door Coupe |
| Mitsubishi Lancer: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Handling: Holds the road really well with a sporty suspension but stays smooth on long highway trips |
Ride smoothness: Not too hard, not too soft |
Available features: In it's class, the Lancer comes with lots of equipment and gadgets |
Exterior styling: Amazing looking sporty sedan |
Fuel economy: Very good millage/power ratio |
| Top of page ^ |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Handling: Way too stiff |
Ride smoothness: Unlike the mitsubishi lancer, the Altima coupe is stiff and has a bumpy ride everywhere |
Front seat comfort: test drove it for 15 minutes and never could found the right driving position |
Front seat room: i'm 5'8" and only had about 3 inches from my head to the roof |
Cargo capacity & towing: Trunk space is way too small even for a coupe |
| Top of page ^ |
2008 Volkswagen GTI4-door Hatch | > | 2008 Nissan Altima2-door Coupe |
| Volkswagen GTI: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Powertrain performance: Peak torque comes on between 1500 and 2000 rpm and stays through redline in the first 3 gears (DSG transmission). Quick, smooth and easy shifts with steering wheel paddles, faster than I can shift a manual. |
Exterior styling: Hatchback shape, aggresive front styling. |
Handling: Smooth and confident at high speeds and while accelerating quickly. A good compromise of tolerable ride and sporty handling. |
Rear seat room & comfort: With the 4 door GTI I can drive 4 full size adults around in comfort. Easy ingress-egress. |
Fuel economy: Averaging 27.7 mpg in mixed, spirited driving. Good mix of turbocharged power and 4 cylinder economy. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Powertrain performance: 4 cylinder version offered less power than some similarly priced vehicles. CVT transmission. |
Rear seat room & comfort: Difficult entry; Lever in akward position to move front passenger seat forward for rear seat ingress/egress. Headroom, legroom. |
Cargo capacity & towing: Trunk too small. |
Handling: Not as flat in curves than some similarly priced vehicles. (More aggresive tire/wheel setup would help) |

2008 Hyundai Sonata4-door Sedan | > | 2008 Nissan Altima4-door Sedan |
| Hyundai Sonata: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Quietness: Our Sonota is very smooth and quiet. |
Fuel economy: We are getting exceptional mileage. Between 28.5 and 29.5 mpg in everyday driving. 25 mile round trip commute to work. |
Discounts & incentives: I think we got a great deal. We got our GLS w/ automatic and preferred package for $15,500. We couldn't touch any other midsize or compact car at that price point. |
Materials & workmanship: Our Sonota looks and feels like a quality car. I have yet to hear any kind of a rattle or squeak on our winter ravished road. The paint is perfect. Doors close with a solid thunk. We have had the car for about 2 months & no problems with anything. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Price or payments: The Altima would have cost us $4000-$5000 more with similar equipment level. |
Ride smoothness: The altima did ot ride poorly, just not as smoothly as the Sonata. |

2010 Nissan Altima4-door Sedan |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Available features: My wife is the one who chose this. The intellikey feature being standard on the S trim sold her |
Front seat room: I'm a big guy and I fit in the car just fine. |
Fuel economy: We've averaged 27.9 MPG in mixed urban driving over the first 11K miles |
Quietness: We drove the Altima, Camry, Mazda 6 and the Sonata and found the Altima to be as quiet if not more so than the others. |
Driving position & visibility: It's comfortable and I don't find any large blind spots. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Powertrain performance: I don't like the CVT. My wife could care less, but I'm not a fan of the "motorboating" nature of the CVT. It just feels strange after 30 years of driving sticks and traditional automatic transmissions. |

2009 Nissan Altima4-door Sedan |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Fuel economy: The Altima Hybrid estimated MPG is 35/33 - I haven't had it long enough to get a real number. It's also one of only five cars with the "Smartway Elite" rating for emissions at www.epa.gov/greenvehicles. |
Safety & braking: It get five star crash ratings all the way around, and a four star rollover rating. The Prius is not as good. |
Interior styling: I got the blonde leather interior, which looks refined and not cheap. It's not as nice as the luxury cars I was looking at (Infiniti M35, Hyundai Genesis), but it's also much less expensive. |
Available features: I got the connection and convenience packages, which includes Bluetooth and an MP3 player input. Would have liked iPod integration, but wasn't available. |
Price or payments: It was about $10K cheaper than the other cars I was looking at. I also got a $1500 rebate, and there's a $2350 tax credit for this car. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Quietness: Not as quiet as the luxury cars I was considering. On the other hand, it's much lighter and much more fuel efficient, so it's really a tradeoff of what's important to you. |

2009 Nissan Altima4-door Sedan |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons to buy |
|---|
Safety & braking: Passenger airbgs for the kids, is what I was aiming for here. The braking could be a little better I think. |
Past personal experience: I have had past experience with a Nissan Maxima and Nissan Titan. Both vehicles were very reliable, competitively priced, and sporty. |
Powertrain performance: With the CVT, this car has a lot of get-up and go. |
Fuel economy: I had a 4 cyl Toyota Camry that got about 21 mpg. The 6cyl Altima with CVT gets 21.8. |
Discounts & incentives: I purchased the 2009 at the end of 2009, and received a $2000 rebate and 0% financing. Cant beat that. |
| Top of page ^ |
| Nissan Altima: Reasons not to buy |
|---|
Ride smoothness: It drives like a sports car with a tightly tuned suspension, which can get annoying for around the town trips with the family. |
Audio & nav systems: The Audio system would not play MP3 disks, which I thought was pretty standard these days. I changed it out with a Alpine to hook up my iPod. |
Exterior styling: I dont really like the headlights, they just look big and boxy from the front. Should have gone for the BMW 6 series lights, by cutting out some of the top. |
Control design: What I was getting at here was how the climate controls work. For example, in the morning, I am trying to defrost my windows, but a truck is spewing smoke at me, but I cannot select the air to re-circulate unless I have it on feet, which does not defrost. |
