The Right Car for Me | TrueDelta

crbspan

I need to replace the 2002 ML320. I would prefer to stay under 22000, but will consider 25000. Looked at Cadillac SRX and BMW
X1. SRX was nice, but the engine light was on and dealer said it was because it was sitting a while. I did not buy the explanation or the car. The X1 was zippy, but seat adjustment was not acceptable. Also considering a Lincoln MKX or MKC.

Priorities: Warranty, maintenance cost / Fuel economy / Brand reputation & image

Need minimum of 4 seats

Will consider both new and used cars
Maximum mileage: 60000
Maximum age: 5 years

Maximum price: US $ 25000

BMW X1 is not one of their more reliable vehicles. Since its 2013 redeisgn it has had scattered problems with the engine in 2015, electronics and air bags 2014, air bags on 2015, and the fuel system in 2016. In 2017 it is reliable so far but it is only one year old.

The Cadillac could be okay if the light can be fixed before the car is sold. They were pretty okay between 2012-2016.

Lincolns just have problems - a lot of them. Examples include air bags, elecronics, and power equipment. You take your chances with them.

You might expand your search beyond used German and American cars...... and I drive a used German car......

Perhaps consider an Acura RDX or Lexus NX if maintenance cost and reliability are really important.

If you care about reliability and maintainance costs you should stay away from the German brands, Lincoln, and Cadillac (with a few exceptions). Lexus, Buick and Acura are the most reliable luxury brands.

My neighbor drives a BMW X1 and he likes to tow his small boat with it. It is probably just a specific problem, but since he bought it when he starts the engine it sounds like metal in a blender. It is not a reliable car like almost every BMW. I have read tons of complaints about the front and rear seat comfort.

The Lincoln MKC has a lot of electrical and transmission problems. The MKX is more reliable, but not by much.

I think the Acura RDX is one of the best used luxury SUVs you can buy. If you bought one new it would be outdated compared to other SUVs, but it has been around for a while so if you bought a used one it will be on par with the other options. It was a competitive car around 2012.

The Cadillac SRX has always been pretty reliable. The redesign in 2010 through 2016 had a problem with the headlights where water can leak into them and short out. For one headlight assembly it costs $1500. I had a similar experience with the CEL test driving a used car. My son was buying a Mazda3 and we found this really good deal an hour north of us in LA. We made an appointment and they said they had the car on the lot. We got there and waited an hour and a half for them to go to the offsite lot. It turns out they it had a dead battery and the salesman ran out of gas on the way to the dealer. When we finally looked in the car we found out they cracked open the windows because it was a smoker's car which means when it rains water gets inside. Mud was on the seats and carpet. The brakes were squeaking and every light on the dash was on. Worst CPO car ever! They offered half off the price, but I said I wouldn't pay over $100. Make sure you don't run into a car like this one. Not all dealers take care of their offsite lot cars.

Look for a 2010 or newer Lexus RX350. It will be your best option. It is very reliable and comfortable. It will last you to at least 200k miles.

A Buick Envision is a good choice if you can find one in your budget. I wouldn't get the base model because it doesn't have many features.

Get a Lexus RX 350. I bought a 2015 and I am on my first road trip now, the car is a dream ride. The SRX and others just don't compare. Lexus features and reliability beat out all the competitors.

As a second place consideration I'd recommend a GMC Terrain SLT 2, last generation. With the V6, it is a close match for the Lexus.
