Introduction

This has been a reliable, rock solid car for my family for the past 11 years. It has great fuel economy if you don't mind a lot of road noise.

Why the 2002 Hyundai Accent?

Reliability & durability

This car just keeps going and going and going with so few repairs in between. I'm now in my 11th year of ownership with just under 125k miles. The most expensive repair for the car has been the scheduled maintenance.

Fuel economy

Want an older car that gets really good fuel economy, then you should look at the 2002 Accent. I'm averaging around 30 MPG -- not bad for an 11 year old car.

Warranty, maintenance cost

Never had any issues getting warranty work done on the car. This included the Hyundai Preferred plan that extended the bumper to bumper to 10 years / 100,000 miles. It was a good thing as there was a problem with the fuel tank that had to be repaired at 98k miles. Hyundai's Preferred plan paid for itself right there.

Why Not the 2002 Hyundai Accent?

Quietness

Want to have a conversation with your passengers? Not in this car, unless you plan on yelling at them. The noise is better at speeds under 40mph, but at highway speeds you almost have to yell at your passengers.

Rear seat room & comfort

This is becoming a much bigger problem now that my kids are getting older. I'm about 6 feet tall so the seat has to be fully extended. This only leaves about 8 inches between the seat back and the rear seat for my son. Forget adult passengers -- they'll be so uncomfortable they would rather walk!

Conclusion

I would recommend this car to first time drivers and individuals needing something to just get around town. I would not recommend ever taking a long trip in this car. If I didn't have children, I might consider a more recent model year, but it's just too small for a family.
