While reviews are mixed, the Skyactiv engine delivers as promised for me. With over 70% city/suburb driving, I've yet to average under 30mpg (odo/pump). Set the cruise control at 65-70 and > 40mpg is easy on a flat highway.
I wanted to move to a more economical car from my RX-8. The Mazda3 was the only econo car I test drove where I felt the handling was good enough for me to not miss the 8 too much. I applaud Mazda for continuing to incorporate sportiness across the line.
Dealer stock is high on the 2012s right now and Mazda has some good corporate promotions going on. Find a dealer who is close to making their quarterly numbers and you can get a heck of a deal. I came in at well under invoice.
I'm generally not a fan of auto transmissions, especially on small 4 cylinder engines. After driving both the 6sp M and 6sp A, the auto was the better choice though. Coming from the RX-8, the 3 manual was lacking. The skyactiv auto works as adverti
