Reviewed: 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser

4dr SUV 239-horsepower 4.0L V6 5-speed automatic 4WD, part-time w/low range

Why the 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser?

Powertrain performance

Powerful V-6 with plenty of starting/acceleration when driving in the city. Option of locking rear differential absolute must when off-road.

Brand reputation & image

The FJ40 was a workhorse for years, this update should be similar. It is unapologetically built as a utility vehicle that is supposed to be useful in un-paved areas of the country.

Controls and instruments

The instrument cluster and placement of the interior controls is very intuitive. Fit and finish of the entire cockpit is head and shoulders above any other off-road vehicle.

Exterior styling

The nod to the old days in the boxier dimensions and lack of the plain vanilla "bubble car" designs being shoveled on us by car makers today. The roof rack finishes off the top while being useful at the same time.
