Reviewed: 2008 Volkswagen R32

2dr Hatch 250-horsepower 3.2L V6 6-speed automated manual AWD

Why the 2008 Volkswagen R32?

Powertrain performance

The narrow angle VR6 is a spectacularly smooth engine once warmed up. Paired with the tuned exhaust system it makes Porsche-esque noises and has strong, turbine like response in the midrange revs. Just enough power to keep you from getting into trouble.

Brand reputation & image

Like the 2004 R32, the 2008 R32 had a limited production run of 5000, most of which are now sold. The R32 is really a well balanced "mini grand touring" car; without the stigma of being a "rice racer" like the Evo or STi. A great car for road and track!

Why Not the 2008 Volkswagen R32?

Quietness

Nothing...the R32 is fairly quiet at a 70mph cruise, given the wheels/tire/suspension setup. "Beautiful noise" is what this car is all about; with exhaust and intake notes so intoxicating I turn the stereo down just to hear it better! RRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Ride smoothness

It is amazingly supple for a car of this purpose--a true sporting GT. The R32 has a great combination of ride-versus-handling for everyday commuting. It is NOT a "track monster" or "canyon-carver" or "rice-racer." It IS a balanced, sure-footed mini GT.
