We needed a vehicle that could hold up to 7 people, and there were few choices at the time. The XC90 fit the bill, and has come in handy a few times (although the rear two seats are really only for kids/small adults).
Love the standard features, like stability control, all around side air bags, and the great reputation Volvo has for safety.
Very quiet vehicle to drive (as compared to our 95 civic!)
Volvo make some of the most comfortable seats on the market.
