I'm happy to report that any car is better than walking! I recently rented a 2015 Toyota Corolla and thought nothing was wrong with it. It's one of the most reliable cars on the road and it's relatively comfortable.
Since you said midsized, get a Camry or Accord. They are nice, reliable cars.
