I'd recommend a Toyota 4Runner over an Xterra any day. 2005 to 2008 Xterras had transmissions that would have coolant leak on them and kill them. It is a $4000 fix because you have to replace the radiator and transmission. 4Runners are more expensive but with maintenance they can run well over 250k miles.

Toyota 4Runner

The Xterra has drive system issues as Lectrofuel states. If that does not dissuade you also consider issues with electronics and less serious squeaks and rattles.

The 4Runner is your best older truck based choice. After that there is the Chevy Yukon (2011-2014 your best bets although they do have some issues) and the older Dodge Durrangos. After that they become really too unreliable to consider, and these options are not quite as reliable as the Toyota.
