Headlight extends well into fender, undulating body side. Opinions will vary. Nice interior, but the Ford's is nicer.
Over-done, over-sized grille not my favorite exterior detail. Rising beltline compresses the rear windows.
More complicated than the Elantra Touring's, but most buttons are large and within easy reach. Less legroom than in the Elantra Touring, but still roomier and more comfortable than the average.
Competitive, with some hidden storage beneath the floor. Much handier than a sedan's trunk. Hyundai's hexagonal grille. With panoramic sunroof, windshield appears to continue up into the roof.
A dramatically rising belt line makes for tall rear haunches. Elantra GT much more stylish than the Elantra Touring. Even dramatic. But is it beautiful?
Excessive front overhang on the Mazda disguised by the s's 18-inch wheels. The SE's 17-inch alloy wheels kept the Elantra Touring from appearing downright dowdy.
Complex surfacing helps disguise the height of the body sides towards the rear. Quality look and feel inside. Tan (a bit washed out in the photos) a welcome option.
The trimmer, cleaner Mazda appears especially athletic from this angle. The Mazda's interior is sportier, but also emotionally colder, even in ivory/black (not shown).
As much as I like the tan, it clashes a bit with the silver trim. Well-designed controls, except those on the center stack are a little too much of a reach.
Upholstered instrument cluster hood an upscale detail. Instrument panel even deeper than it looks. Comfortable driver seat provides some lateral support.
About the most comfortable back seat in the segment (unless you're tall). You can't get one of these in any other compact hatchback.
Low, flat floor, but a bit of a PITA to fold the seat. GDI on the engine cover advertises the presence of gasoline direct injection.
Elantra GT engine no longer weak, but not quite strong, either. Could sound better. MPG marginal. What do you think of Hyundai's latest grille design? I like it much better than its predecessors.
Not striking, but a handsome shape with a clear Audi influence. Sporty enough? The latest Honda Civic has much busier styling that's much more likely to get the car noticed.
The previous Elantra GT was styled more like the new Civic. Note the windshield angle. The Elantra sedan shares no body panels and has much different styling. Which do you prefer?
In Europe, you can get a longer, wagon body style. The hatchback has a short rear overhang. If you didn't already know, which brand would you think offered this car?
An unexpectedly upscale interior. Red details add just enough color. The placement of the infotainment display permits a lower instrument panel. Opportunity squandered.
More striking styling inside the Civic as well. Plus a lower instrument panel. Far too much cheap-looking silver trim inside the previous Elantra GT.
Comfortable and supportive driver seat Rear seat on the tight side. Elantra Touring was much roomier.
Cargo space about average for a compact hatchback. A useful amount of space with the seats folded, but no crossover substitute.
