The blower for the passenger compartment climate control (heating and air conditioning) had the well-known, Volvo bearing squeal. It was slight when purchased (104,000 miles) and progressed until unbearable (108,000 miles). Since the blower is tucked way up inside the dash, removal and replacement is time-consuming and costly, with shop estimates from $1000 to $1500. I removed the front cowl, and using a flashlight, mirror, and long piece of small diameter tubing (you can use something else I'm sure), I put TriFlow lubricant into the end of the tubing and snaked it in to the front motor bearing (could see that the shaft was a little rusty). I could only put one drop on the bearing at a time, but the bearing was totally silent for almost a year (including freezing winter temps) and is just beginning to occasionally make a little noise. I'll do it again and use more lubricant this time. If you're a DIYer (or if you can get your mechanic to do this), this method saves a lot of time and money.
