2008 Chevrolet Tahoe 4dr SUV

320-horsepower 5.3L V8 4-speed automatic 4WD w/low range

144000 mi The spare tire would not come down. The secondary latch (a safety mechanism to prevent the tire from suddenly dropping) rusted to the point that it would not open. After watching a bunch of YouTube videos on how to solve this unfortunately VERY common problem, I was able to force open the secondary latch with a long screwdriver and a hammer. I then sprayed it with PB Blaster to remove some of the rust. When that dried, I used a TON of silicone grease (both spray-on and brake caliper grease) on the secondary latch to hopefully allow it to move despite the rust. It seems to be better, but I won't know if I've solved the problem until trying to take the tire down again after a few months.
